Former Bafana Bafana midfielder John "Shoes" Moshoeu has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

The former Kaizer Chiefs star passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

His agent, Glyn Binkin, confirmed his death on Twitter.

In May 2014, Moshoeu hung up his boots after spending several seasons with third-tier side Alexandra United.

Moshoeu, a Kaizer Chiefs star from 1988-1993 and again from 2003 until 2006, also shone in the Turkish league for Fenerbahce and Bursaspor from 1997 until his return to South Africa in 2003.

'Shoes' was capped 73 times for South Africa and scored eight times.

Most notably, he was one of Bafana's stand-out performers in their 1996 African Cup of Nations triumph, scoring four goals in the tournament.
