Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah played the full match in Evian TG’s 2-0 loss to Olympique Marseille who had Andre Ayew in their starting lineup.
A neat finish from the in-form Andre-Pierre Gignac got Marseille up and running within 16 minutes of the game played at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday.
Evian however held their own for the remainder of the first half but were unlucky not to have gone on level pegging with several goalscoring chances spurned.
Marseille however took charge of the second half and should have extended their lead.
Andre Ayew had a blatant penalty shout in the 60th minute turned down after the Ghanaian was fouled in the Evian danger area after beating his man towards goal.
Their hardwork was however rewarded seven minutes later as Dimitri Payet turned Mensah in and out before slotting home to ease the pressure on Elie Baup’s men.
Jordan Ayew remained an unused substitute for Saturday’s match.
The win sees Marseille climb back to the top of Ligue 1 alongside Olympique Lyon with maximum points reaped from their two opening games.
It however sees Evian continue with their search of an opening Ligue 1 win following their opening day draw with Sochaux.
