Essien walks straight into Real Madrid team to face Granada

Essien meets new teammates in first Real Madrid training on Saturday evening

By Ameenu Shardow

Michael Essien has been called up to the Real Madrid squad to face Granada after completing just one training session with the side.

Just like earlier reported by GHANAsoccernet.com, the Ghana international joined up with his new teammates in training moments after being presented to the fans as a new signing at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 29-year-old signed a season’s-long loan contract earlier in the evening after passing a routine club medical at the Sanitas La Morajela Hospital.

Essien became Madrid’s final summer signing following his move from English club Chelsea on transfer deadline day on Friday night.

He was received well by his new teammates at the training grounds which started off with stretches presided over by Rui Faria.

The session then heated up with short races and sprints before Jose Mourinho came in with his game plan for Sunday’s game against Granada.

He then called out the 20-man team for the game to be played at the Bernabeu with new signing Michael Essien quite a surprise addition considering the short time he’s been with the team.

Real Madrid’s team to face Granada:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Adán y Pacheco.

Defence: Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Albiol, Pepe, Arbeloa y Varane.

Midfielders: Özil, Xabi Alonso, Khedira, Essien, Modric, Callejón, Di María y Kaká.

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema e Higuaín.

Though am happy for essien, have we also thought about the fact that Madrid is all about a player who can sell jerseys? In Madrid is sometimes not about how good or powerful u are but how good your marketability!! Owen was an excellent player but was hardly use, diarra was good but hardly use, etc…. that is their philosophy and shouldn’t surprise me if essien is bench in subsequent matches if they see he is not all that maketable but yet again my piece of advice to him is that he should try to market himself very well by not only playing well but having powerful friends in madrdid, applying to the madrid female supporters coz they buy most of the madrid jerseys, pants etc and bechem was example of how the female supporters are powerful in madrid setup…..
