Essien to play a key role in Copa del Rey El Classico

Posted On Wednesday, 30th January 2013

Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is expected to play a key role for Real Madrid in their Copa del Rey semi-final clash with Barcelona tonight.

Up to five players will not be available for Mourinho as he prepares a team to face the Catalans.

First choice goalkeeper Iker Casillas and defender Pepe are injured, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Angel Di Maria are suspended.

Mourinho’s options are many but it will largely depend on where Essien plays.

The on-loan Chelsea star played at right-back in the 4-0 win over Getafe on Sunday in the La Liga.

Essien is also an option in midfield to partner Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira for the first leg encounter.
