Essien, Prince Boateng axed from Ghana starting line-up to face USA, Kwarasey starts

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has taken a brave decision of axing world-class midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Michael Essien from his starting line-up to face the USA at the World Cup tonight, opting for younger players to fight in the expected physically challenging match in the Brazilian city of Natal.

Kevin-Prince Boateng has been excluded from Ghana’s starting line-up against USA

The coach also axed goalkeeper Fatau Dauda from his starting-up opting for Norway-based Adam Kwarasey who has been in excellent form for title winners Stromsgodset.

The coach also took another brave decision by choosing midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah to play from his unusual left-back position – a position he has excelled in with Italian giants Juventus leading them to the Serie A title.

Jordan Ayew, who hit a hat-trick against South Korea in a friendly last week, is the preferred choice in attack ahead of Abdul Majeed Waris even though the latter has recovered from a thigh injury.

Christian Atsu, who lighted up the Dutch top-flight league with his skills and talent last season, will be played from the right-wing with Andre Ayew playing in the opposite direction.

With the Americans expected to be physical in their approach to the game, hard-tackling and lion-hearted Rabiu Mohammed will partner the experienced Sulley Muntari in the heart of midfield.

Jonathan Mensah and John Boye will play in central defensive while Daniel Opare is the sure bet at right-back with Asamoah Gyan as the ghost striker, playing behind Jordan Ayew.

The starting-up confirms coach Appiah approach to his work as a manager who looks at the performances of players during their training with the Black Stars with adept strategy.

Essien and Boateng are experienced players in the Black Stars squad with global popularity for their achievements in the game but recent knee operations have robbed them of their pace and tackling abilities.

This means Appiah wants younger players to fight for the ball in the opening half of the game and qwill rely on youngsters Atsu, Rabiu, Andre Ayew and Muntari to help in the midfield battle.

The defenders will see Opare preferred over Samuel Inkoom or Harrison Afful because of his excellent showing at the right-back while Asamoah is the more experienced hand at left-back.

Even though the choice of Asamoah is unpopular among some Ghanaians, he has proved effective in that position at Juventus and with few talented players in that position for the Black Stars, Appiah has opted for the safer bet.

Kwarasey dethrones Dauda as Ghana’s leading goalkeeper following his good showing in the match against Holland while Jordan’s recent explosive form in training gives him the advantage over Waris.

This also means that coach Appiah has some world class options on the bench in case the match turns difficult with Essien, Boateng, Mubarak Wakaso and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu all on the bench.

Ghana are hoping to start their campaign with a win against the Americans to boost their chances of advancing from the very difficult Group of Death that includes Germany and Portugal.

Ghana starting line-up

Adam Kwarasey, Daniel Opare, Kwadwo Asamoah, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye, Rabiu Mohammed, Christian Atsu, Sulley Muntari, Jordan Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew.

AA , the silent killer.. hmmmmmm lets all pray for them cos the team US are really coming for a revenge

  7. Frank Dimson says:

Well the selection is not bad but the position been given to kwadwo asamoah is worrying because at the left full back he will be attempted to dribbling. And when he losses the ball it can be dangerous so the left back position for kwadwo asamoah is very bad so the coache should change his strategy.

  8. Ericus says:

Nt bad. Cos kevin performs better when he starts 4rm bench. Team gh on ma mind……… Lets do dis

  9. abandeutschland says:

the sellection is perfect so far

I foresee the American will controlling the midfield.

  16. nesta says:

Kwesi appiah i salute you for starting daniel opare on the right back.your sellection is superb for the usa game.the phycologist must relly work on Atsu he should be bold and do his thin.

  17. tuna says:

this is a bad selection…. what kind of experiment is this…. atsu and jordan and kojo in defence….. where is badu.,. kelvin…what is muntari doing…

  18. The Cockerel says:

Happy with goalkeeper, defence and defensive midfield. Our attack looks a bit lightweight and look ripe for bullying. Hope I’m wrong. Anyway, we have a top class bench if needed. C’mon Black Stars!

  19. scrollwitty says:

Ei mayele kwesi appiah, you’ve got balls,we have a good bench, all that matters is for them to take their chances

  20. Nimo says:

    MISTAKE!

Prince should have started, cos atsu hasn’t performed well lately when he starts. He brings in a new burst of energy from the bench.

  21. anokwale says:

At the end of the day, it is a talented line up. I suspect we are going to see Dede go right at Fabian Johnson and KASA doing some overlapping. We cannot complain. If there is a problem, we can always bring Prince and the rest off of the bench.

  22. Soccer Pundit says:

I said it. Appiah is not only clueless, but he is also dull and inept. Must win game and he benches our key players in favor of Jordan, Atsu and Rabiu and plays a 4-4-2 system? What kind of cool aid is he drinking? This team will not make it to half time without being down 2-0. Don’t even want to watch the game anymore because we’re going to be out of the world cup before it even starts.! Idiot Appiah!

    • maka says:

Pundit, please “ssshhh” before people start insulting u o… Some of us agree with u 100%, and right now, we all live to see. Siddon dey watch mode activated!

It beats me when people can’t see that AA is clueless. We shall all see how useless our midfield will be…we should just hope we don’t concede more than Portugal.

If we win this game, its not Akwasi who won it, but d boys wanting to die in beating the U.S. Additionally, I don’t see us getting far in this tournament, cos its obvious AA went to Brazil to experiment….

      Siddon mode, like I said.
      Beats me~

    • hp says:

@ Soccer Pundit, do u know better than the Coach?? u do know what you are talking about…

  23. Redboy says:

Shit squad.. We lucky to escape with draw

  24. ballu gbei says:

WE DIE FINISH. DID KWASI APPIAH SEE HOW SLOW MUNTARI WAS AGAINST THE KOREANS. BY THE TIME HE REALIZES HIS MISTAKE WE MAY BE DOWN BY A COUPLE OF GOALS. THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR EXPERIMENTATION. I HAVE GIVEN UP.

  26. the lion says:

i dont understand why the coach would put our most creative player in the left back position.the tactical role he plays in europe will be different from his role in ghana.honestly,i think the coach is confused.

  27. sharky says:

Very tricky lineup. But I would have loved to see a very strong experienced lineup right from the start.

KKwarasey, inkoom, opare, boye, Jonathan mensah, essien, dede ayew, kwadwo asamoah, Kevin prince Boateng, Waris, Gyan.

Brave decision? Gsn you are a bunch of jokers! The coach knows what he is doing. Lets all support him and pray for a win

  30. Boardroom says:

I think we’re in deep shit, US will run us down.

  31. the truth says:

am not so sold on atsu, but lets see what happens. I wish K. Asamoah was playing in the wings though. Appiah obviously want to push the ball up and score many goals so lets hope for the best. we must win this game at all cost!!!!!

  32. Troy says:

Soccer Pundit you are very stupid. No one wants u to even watch it.

  33. King of Kings says:

The selection is not bad. I wish Ghana has a reliable no 3 ,so Kwadwo Asamoah will move forward. U.s.a will control the midfield in this game. Kwadwo Asamoah is more dangerous forward or Midfield than left back. God help Ghana in this Tournament.

  34. Boro says:

I am now begining to fall in love with AA especially after this wonderful selection except to say i still wanna see how he will deal with our central defense in case of injury after leaving out Ainooson, Adusei, Nuru out from this squad.

  35. spellBOUND says:

AA, MORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE VIM. lol. prince should have started, but still this is a nice selection…. Jordan, please be decisive as you were against Korea… no unnecessary dribbling, u r a striker, do what strikers do.. hold the ball for support, and shoot when the chance arises.

  36. george says:

…rabiu and atsu is my problem. i think badu should be selected instead of rabiu and acquah instead of atsu.technically the k.apiah should know what these players brings onboard. am disappointed but we shall see.

  37. African Consciousness says:

Every member of this squad is hard working and a team player, they will be fine. We have 23 players and they are all equal, they are all interchangeable, let’s support the Coach.

  38. pee says:

good line-up.this game would produce a goal which can be grabed by either teams.Or goaless draw but I hope ghana wins though

  40. papa says:

this is a a great lineup. i think muntari made the line up because of his setpiece skills. his first touch will need to improve. my only worry is how he will carry the ball to the attackers. i wish rabiu had better ball skills. he will prove essential in defense however. if we had a strong left back asamoah wud be in midfield.

  41. 1korku says:

splendid lineup.what we have here is the element of surprise.any coach could have planned for kevin and essien.AA hs done the Americans well doodgeeeee. we have speed, vim and creativity in the squad.Go blackstars Go!!

  42. BRENTO says:

WAT A SQUARD. BOATENG WILL COME IN TO REPLACE JORDAN IN DE 2nd HALF. WE GOOD TO GO

  43. Nana USA says:

I just don’t like Muntari and Rabieu midfield and I hope atsu can utilise chances, to start Atsu over Boateng is scary but I trust the coach

  44. Boardroom says:

AA is the best,we’ll humble the Yankees 3-0.

  45. Coach says:

This is not perfecto , fuck Appiah You need to start afful

  46. NO BUGA says:

NO BUGA TO DE DEFENDERS. U SHD SEE WAT PORTUGAL FARE WITH RACIST GERMANS. U PLAY WITH UR SENSE NT UR STRENGTH. TATS SOCCER TODAY.
    JUST NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUGA

  47. Lovely says:

Troy u are an asshole to say soccer pundut is stupid. The stupid coach is gambling with our team and u are there insulting people who are making their frank opinion. AA is a double asshole!!!

  48. Redboy says:

Kwrsi appiah… Nkwasea line up,,, kasa in defence

  49. Nana says:

Mistake! How we need these players to control the game

  50. Papa Addo says:

i like this but i would have loved to see ayew where jordan is, kasa on the left and wakasso at left back because kasa at left back looks a bit uncomfortable an doesnt play to his full potential. but big ups for dropping boateng.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE CRYING ABOUT BOATENG, YES, HE HAS QUALITY BUT THIS IS A WORLD CUP AND WE NEED PLAYERS WHO PLAY WITH HEART AND HE HASNT SHOWN THAT HIS HEART BELONGS TO GHANA.

    GHANA 3-0 USA

  51. Eric says:

I don’t trust the starting line up

  52. extrovert says:

is not bad but i prefer kpb n micheal 2 start

  53. seidu amadu denteh says:

It is very good starting line up end of the much we will win

  54. benny says:

AA should have started KPB instead of Atsu. ,Waris instead of Jordan.
The plus is dropping Dauda and Inkoom.

  55. Frank says:

@SoccerPundit…….masa r u the coach? Why are u the coach if you knoe soo much abt football?Do u see wat he sees in training? You are the idiot and a fool, fuck face. Who’s the US team for him not to play 4-4-2? Shut the front door

  56. Benito says:

Killer line up ,Astu is secret weapon ,America are you really, really for this ???

  57. Boy Wonder says:

This is a GREAT line up by Kwesi Appiah against a US team that has been preparing to face a Ghana team that keeps possession and attacks the goal. He has created a compact line up to defend the goal instead. This forces the US to change their tactics a few hours to game time. When two compact teams play against each other talent and hardwork wins over tactics. Go BlackStars!!!!

  58. Just one of us says:

I think the line-up is arguably fair. USA is not an opponent that need the push full squard.

  59. King of Kings says:

Kelvin and inkoom are starting the game. Where did GSN got his selection from?

  60. Benito says:

Jordan is in form, atsu is creative.good selection

  61. Master Dribbler says:

I am supporting the USA in this match on the surface of it in as much as it would be good for Africa for Ghana to win. Am not happy my country failed to qualify owing to Ghana

  62. isquared says:

Majid Warris, Michael Essien & KPB are not starting likely cos they are possibly not 100% fit or lack the pace to keep up with a very fit U.S. team. Thus Jordan & Atsu in. Kwadwo Asamoah is stronger & pacier than Afful to contain dangerous U.S. right fullback Fabian Johnson who initiates the majority of U.S. attacks from the right flank. Together with Dede, that threat can be contained. BS will most likely be in an attack-minded 4-4-2 formation with Gyan & Jordan switching roles laterally. Atsu & Dede will be playmakers cutting in from the wings. Expect a high-scoring & high-tempo game similar to qualifying 1st leg against Egypt in Kumasi. Predict BS win 4-1!!!!

    • Johnny says:

Very likely Warris has not fully recovered. Gyan-Warris pair always clicks, even Gyan said he prefers pairing with him. Let’s see how it goes, and I believe they’ll do win the game.

  63. kojo says:

I support Coach Appiah’s decision – - we will need Essien in mid-field to bring experience later in the game.
    Go Ghana

  64. James, Hohoe says:

Hello fellow contributors on this forum, I am not comfortable with the heading of this story by GSN. The title says Essien and KPB have been AXED from the starting line up. From the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, International Student’s Edition, to AXE means
” to get rid of a system or service, or to remove somebody from his or her job. The players have not been sacked or removed from the team, so why use the word AXE?

  65. nana kusi says:

I believe Atsu is the surprise package for the americans…..Go Black stars!!..VIM

  66. readi 2 dye says:

I think y’all should support AA. He always surprise his doubters…. y’all thinking about worshiping idols after the man rained manna in the desert. Have some faith….it’s all good.

  67. Master Dribbler says:

I am supporting the United States

  68. spellBOUND says:

Nigeria has to be the most USELESS team in Africa in addition to Cameroon of course….. Aaaaah, unable to break down an Iranian team that spend 90 minute behind the ball and absolutely no threat going forward, and yet 9ja after dominating possession 70% to 30%, still couldn’t do SHIT. At the 70th minute mark, their own fans started to boo them.. Noni 9ja’s first HE-GOAT. u are forever banned from GSN… i don’t see how u can get pass the embarrassment to come here again. Stephen Keshi’s reaction during the later minutes of the game said it all. No world cup win since 1998?????? just laughable.

  69. sam says:

    Rabiu should swap with kpb

  70. JOHN AKPA says:

GET THE COACH OUT !!!! WHY MUNTARI ??? TOO MANY LEFT FOOTERS. DID HE WORK THEM OUT THIS MORNING ? THEY LOOKED TIRED. GET THE COACH OUT NOW. WE SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE SERBIAN !!!!

  71. Fab says:

Akwasi appiah please resign now.You lack ideas and did not know what to do.we should not lose to USA with this players.

  72. Fab says:

The coach is just not good enough.
