Essien impresses on Real Madrid debut in win over Man City

Posted On Tuesday, 18th September 2012

Michael Essien challenges City's Yaya Toure for the ball in yesterday's Uefa Champions League tie

Michael Essien made his debut for Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League thrilling 3-2 victory at home against Manchester City.

Essien was handed a surprise start by manager Jose Mourinho in an attacking midfield role in his first match of the season.

He made a transfer deadline day switch from the European champions to the Bernabeu and his performance on the night could earn him more playing time.

The on-loan Chelsea player gave a good account of himself but after 65 minutes he had to make way for Mesut Ozil in the 65th minute.

But Real Madrid fell behind few minutes after the substitution.

Yaya Toure burst through the middle of the park for a two-on-two break, before sliding in the Bosnian Edin Dzeko who wrong-footed Iker Casillas for 1-0.

Mourinho responded as he had in previous games at Getafe and Sevilla, with attacking substitutions, by bringing on both Luka Modric and Karim Benzema.

It immediately paid off as Real equalised as Marcelo benefited from extra space to see his third attempt from range take a deflection and loop over Hart.

City took the lead from a set-play, as Aleksander Kolarov’s in-swinging free-kick from the right beat everyone to curl beyond Casillas into the far post.

But, the lead lasted just a minute as Benzema turned on the edge of the area and finished sharply beyond Hart for his first goal in four months.

Real continued to push for the winner and got it as Ronaldo cut in from the left and his bouncing effort fell under Hart and into the net for 3-2 as the game entered stoppages.

If nobody cannot tell me when I go heave I will ask God,why Nigerians hate Essien so much?

  16. kwame naagbewa says:

Essien is master at quick splendid passes because of his good vision which he showed in this game. He never lost a ball. However I think he was playing very cautiously for reasons I can understand since It’s his first competitive game with the team. He did’nt wanna surge forward a lot with pace like we know he is able to. Like someone just said He showd little ascertiveness. Overall good performance.

  17. Ghanaians are senseless ape says:

Ugly ape, u think Nigerians are envious, insecure, low minded, noise makers and inferiority complex like u and those ur senseless ugly people. Ugly fool wake up, we are in 21st century. They are tall, simple, handsome and well behave. Unlike those short ugly ape, charcoal, attention seekers, noise makers from that senseless and uncivilized country called Gaymen sorry Ghana.

    • cofie says:

  23. Chipolopolo says:

I watched that age cheat fella in d UCL match against CITY!There is surely hope for the black starlets cos he is still elligible for selection.Frankly, his display shows he has nothing to offer again at that height of football again!slow, weak, indisposed, lacks initiatives etc.His substitution brought sponteneous life into rears madrids midfield! But Essien is finished. Please oldman think of your future and begin and aggressive search for a club in the middle east!ITS ONLY A FOOLISH MAN THAT CHASES A RAT WHEN HIS HOUSE IS ON FIRE!

  24. Ghanaians are senseless ape says:

Coffin or cofie, u must be clueless, senseless and low minded like ur ugly ape brother Osama. That is reason why an average gaynian or Ghanaian is low minded, hepocrasy, pretender, always claim innocent and refuse to take irresponsibility of what happen to him, rather he will look for an excuse and blame others for what happen to him. Why not caution ur ugly ape brother before u caution me. Gaynians or ghanaians are bitter people ,envious and poisinous. Plz i know u gaynians or ghanaian are not wise, smart and civilized like other Africans. What u Guynians or Ghanaian know best is to wear red and black to attend funeral every weekend, drink akpetishi( local dry gin) and go and pregnant that ur cheap fat, thick, pot belle girls and leave them to suffer. Listen Nigerians no send guynians or ghanaians message. Because light and darkest have nothing in common. Foot wear have sizes. And we Nigerians don’t care about the bad impression guynians or ghanaians have for us or what guynians or ghanaians are saying about nigeria in their radios, TV or forums. We Nigerians are happy people and free minded and genarous. Unlike stiny, enermy of progress guynaians or ghanaians.

    • Killy says:

We were are not trained to insult other countries, were are civilized. thats why we are blessed. JAH WEY E DEY BLESS WE. learn from us and u will be blessed. GH RULES

    • BoscoGh says:

I don’t think your perception about Ghana as a country and your decision to heap unwarranted insults on a whole nation and its citizenry is a position that is shared by all well meaning Nigerians.

I have been to Lagos on a couple of times and have some Nigerian friends and have interacted with a lot more others at various conferences where Nigerians and Ghanaians attended together.

I know that most Nigerians who are well informed and learned are very nice people, very accomodating and can be very adventurous.

Surely you have embarrassed yourself on this forum by your choice of words and the display of such crude uncivillised attitude.

You are an exception to the many Nigerians I know
Repent and peace be with you
      Good day

  25. Chipolopolo says:

@ghanaians are senseless apes, you get my full backing! All you accused gaynaians of is what they truely are. They do same to we zambians!Could it be as a result of their charcoal burnt brains?Gaynaians are just too daft and irresponsible!Looking for someone to blames for their woos.My Nigerian brothers big up to you!Gaynaians bleep you all!

  26. aduuri says:

pls dis is a platform 4 views expression but not 4 insults and teritorial attacks, pls chipolopolo mind ur consistent attack on ghanaians cos people like u invite troubles but nothing else, learn 2 make peace bro, cos ghanaians are de most peaceful people in africa. big ups 2 essien we luv u.

  27. Ghanaians are senseless ape says:

Ugly ape guynians or ghanaian, stop desceiving urselves that god bless. Infact guynians or ghanaians are most cursed people on earth because guynians or ghanaians celebrate the dead than the living. We someone die in ghana, ghanaians will be very happy because they are going wear red and black like occultic people, dance naked in azoto, drink akpentishe ( local dry gin) and fuck their cheap ugly charcoal, fat ,pot belle girls. God bless ghana and 85% ghanaians are bastards who doesn’t know their fathers. God bless ghana and 92% ugly ghanaian women are single mothers with many children from different father. God bless Ghana and Lebanese, Indian, chinese, nigerian and zabarama people from niger republic own 92% of ghana economy. Infact god curse ghana because ghanaians are ugly ape, bitter people, short with big head( Ashanti tribe), immority, ghanaian women are the most cheapest women in the world and ghanaian men are most lazy men in the world. Ghanaians don’t celebrate success or good thing but they celebrate the deads and juju black stars of Ghana. God bless ghana is the comedy of the 21 century.

  28. daniel says:

what is all this insults? arent we all africans. let us learn to love ourselves and build a stronger continent. because like it or not, ghana depends on nigeria and nigeria also depends on ghana for some materials.soccer wasnt meant to bring division but unty. i am a ghanaian and proud of my nationality but i am also proud to be an afrcans just as nigerians, zambians and other african countries are proud to be africans

  29. aduuri says:

    • steve says:

my eyes were nearly filled with tears and ifelt nolstalgic as I saw the great Bison display close to his best on his debut at Real madrid. It is obvious that with time we will see him bounce back.i really love Essien and i pray for his comeback.Im so proud of Mourihno.he has proven that he is the best coach in the world and loves his players;even his ex-players.however im very disappointed in Di-Matteo for the cruel way he treated Essien even not giving a chance to prove himself.look at the champions league final even with a depleted squad he ignored Essien.I pray Essien improves at Madrid and we will see whether he use him.bravo my man Essien
