Essien could win two Champions Leagues in a row without ever playing

Michael-Essien in action for Real Madrid

Michael Essien could win a second straight UEFA Champions League title at Real Madrid without playing.

The Ghana midfielder warmed the bench for English side Chelsea when they triumphed over Bayern Munich on penalties.

Essien has since moved to Madrid on loan but he is yet to command a regular place in Jose Mourinho’s set up.

Last Tuesday, he was not named in the squad which beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to qualify to the quarter-final of the competition.

However, his versatility can earn him some playing time as Real chase a tenth UEFA Champions League title.

Essien has made 14 appearances for Real Madrid and scored one goal.
