Essien could return to midfield against Mallorca

By Ameenu Shardow

Michael Essien is likely to be restored to the Real Madrid midfield for the weekend’s trip to Real Mallorca.

This is to fill the void created following the injury to Sami Khedira in the 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League game on Wednesday.

The Ghana international has been playing as a makeshift left-back for the Spanish champions with Marcelo, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Contrao all sidelined through injuries.

Real are running short of options in the central midfield position with the only fit candidate Luka Modric not an accomplished player in the holding midfield role.

Essien on the other hand will prefer being played in his usual position following a relatively poor performance in defence against Dortmund in midweek.

Real Madrid have clawed back into fourth in La Liga following a poor start to their title defence.

They are however still a staggering eight-points behind joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Jose Mourinho’s side thus need a win at Mallorca on Sunday – a game many football pundits believe could prove a banana skin for the champions.

guys is it me or essien isn’t the one we used to know, i mean the guy got burned badly against Dortmund,i mean they were just running through him so easily , he couldn’t even catch up

    • Kay says:

You are talking as if you don’t know anything about Essien. When did you see Essien playing at left-back? he filled in because there was nobody.
Even Cristiano Ronaldo cannot play that role.
Give Essien any where in the midfield then we can talk. Mourinho is not complaining because he knows what he can get from Essien.

What do you expect when you put a square peg in a round hole?

  3. p.o.boxz says:

Leave him alone, what could u have done if u where in his shoes-prince

  4. pablo says:

where from this story, Who said he would be restored to The midfield, have marcelo or coentrao fully recovered, you use injury to khedira as basis, but to me moderic is better.

    • Kay says:

Modric plays only one position. Do you really understand the article?
Essien can play both defensive and attacking midfield and a great goal scorer. I am so happy you are not a coach.

  5. Kollars says:

Old age has catch up with him.

  6. BERNIITO says:

“OLD AGE HAS CATCH UP WITH HIM” HMM! BROFO YE DU! ANYWAY, EVERY FOOTBALLER HAS HIS GOOD & BAD DAYS EVEN IN HIS USUAL POSITION & ESSIEN’S IS NO EXCEPTION. NOT ALL PLAYERS CAN BOUNCE BACK TO RECKONING IN A TEAM LIKE MADRID. MAY GOD HELP MOURINHO WHO UNDERSTANDS “UTILITY”

  7. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

I THINK MOURINHO SHOULD DUSCIPLINE PLAYERS LIKE PEPE,DI MARIA AND SERGIO RAMOS. THESE 3 ESPECIALLY WERE THE REASON WHY THEY LOST THIS GAME. PEPE, THAT DISRESPECTFUL FAGGOT IS USELESS. DI MARIA IS A BALL HOGGER AND SERGIO RAMOS DOSENT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PITCH, PLAYS ANYHOW. I AM WATCHING THE GAME AGAIN. BOTH GOALS WERE THE FAULT OF PEPE. THE SECOND GOAL WAS ACTUALLY THE FAULT OF SERGIO RAMOS, AND THEN AGAIN, PEPE.HE SHOULD HAVE BLOCKED THE SHOT WITH HIS FEET. INSTEAD, HE JUMPED, AND THE BALL WENT UNDER HIS FEET STRAIGHT INTO THE NET. PEPE WAS BLOCKING THE VIEW OF CASSILAS, OTHERWISE CASSILAS WOULD HAVE SAVED THE BALL.

HW3, ESSIN PLAYED WELL. FOR A PLAYER WHO HAS HAD 2 CAREER ENDING KNEE SURJURIES, IM SUPRISED HE EVEN LASTED THE ENTIRE 90 MINUTES. GIVE ESSIEN SOME CREDIT. MY ONLY ISSUE WITH ESSIEN IS HE NEEDS TO ATTACK MORE AND PUSH THE BALL FORWARD. WHO NEEDS BACK PASSES? ESSEIN IS NOT GOING TO RUN FOR 90 MINUTES LIKE HE USED TO, BUT HE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH SMART, CRISP, ACCURATE PASSES, LIKE THE COLOMBIAN CAPTAIN CARLOS VALDERAMA IN MIDFIELD. APPIAH SHOULD CALL ESSEIN TO AFCON AND GIVE HIM THE CAPTAIN OVER GYAN

  8. game mind says:

Quincy was awesome, opening Lazio’s defense like a sharp knife passing through a hot butter.AA TRY TO CALL THIS PLAYER….ABEYIE FOREVER

  9. Paul says:

I dont think Essien is part of the plans of Akwasi Appiah for this afcon…quincy shd be tried in up comin friendlies for all of us to see him.
