Espanyol coach Javier Aguirre has revealed he wanted to sign Ghana winger Christian Atsu only to be beaten in the end by English giants Chelsea.
The 21-year-old has joined the Blues on a five-year deal from Portuguese champions FC Porto.
Atus has been however loaned out to Dutch club Vitesse Anhem to continue with his development as a rising star.
Espanyol coach Aguirre however says he wanted to sign the fomer Rio Ave loanee as a replacement for departed fellow Ghana international Mubarak Wakaso.
The Mexican trainer however says the attempt to bring the exciting winger to the La Liga went strange as Chelsea eventually won the race to sign the Ghanaian before the summer transfer window shut.
“First I wanted Christian Atsu [then at Porto], who was the closest thing to Wakaso, it went strange, and then Chelsea beat us,” he said.
Espanyol have now failed to find a replacement for Wakaso who left to join Russian club Rubin Kazan.
