Mubarak Wakaso was sent off in the feisty derby defeat to Barcelona

Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso had to be restrained by his Espanyol teammates after he was sent off in a bizarre fashion in the derby defeat to Barcelona on Sunday.

The hard-tackling Black Stars midfielder was highly enraged after receiving two-yellow cards within seconds for excessive complaints over a challenge on his teammate.

Wakaso, who was masterly in the game by causing problems for the Barcelona defenders, seems to have lost it after some questionable decisions by the arbiter.

Espanyol felt hard-done all-game-long with some dodgy calls by referee David Fernandez in the feisty Catalan derby played at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

The runaway Spanish league winner’s had taken a 14th minute lead through Alexis Sanchez.

The game filled with emotions was turned on its head late on as Espanyol made a late push for that elusive equalizer.

Fans of the Blue and Whites were up screaming at the match officials when Sanchez put in a bad tackle against Capdevila with ten minutes left on the clock.

With 10 minutes to play Wakaso Mubarak earned himself two yellow cards in as many seconds as he protested a decision to award Barcelona a free-kick for a foul on Sanchez.

Wakaso was one of several Espanyol players to be in the face of the referee to protest furiously to the challenge that went unpunished as Sanchez was booked.

The Ghanaian made his feelings clear which brought the first card, and when he appeared to push the referee, he was given his marching orders.

In the end, it was the Ghanaian’s persistent complaints that earned him his first caution but it did little to deter Wakaso as he continued unrelentingly with his protests.

Referee Fernandez felt he had taken enough verbal abuse as he sent of the Ghana midfielder with a second yellow card within second of issuing the first.

The former Villareal man had to be held back by his teammates from physical contact with the referee after attracting his second caution with the home fans expectedly also enraged.

Espanyol’s resolve was finally broken by Pedro four minutes from time to silence the noisy home crowd.

It was the most unfortunate way to end the season for Wakaso who in all terms and purposes had an impressive campaign in just his first year with Espanyol.
