England deal Ghana another blow with Welbeck call-up

After depleting his squad to play Ghana, manager Fabio Capello has delivered another fatal BLOW by inviting youngster Danny Welbeck to join his set-up for tonight's friendly.

Welbeck, born in Manchester to Ghanaian parents, was in a dilemma over his international future and was pushing to represent the West African country.

But the Italian manager Fabio Capello has dented the hopes of Ghana by extending an invitation to the player who has represented the England U21s.

If he handed his first cap, it will end the hopes of the World Cup quarter-finals who had sent a officials to hold preliminary talks with the budding forward.

His club mates Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah and Sulley Muntari had expressed hope the attacker would opt to represent Ghana.

Welbeck, who is on loan at Sunderland this season and has scored six times in 22 Premier League games, has been told he will be recalled by Sir Alex Ferguson to play a part for United next year.

But now he will get the chance to shine for his country after Aaron Lennon was released back to Tottenham as a precaution after he experienced discomfort in his hamstring at the end of Monday's training session.

Welbeck made a goalscoring appearance for the England Under-21 side in their crushing win over Denmark on Thursday but was one of the players released back to his club by coach Stuart Pearce.
