England youth midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong cleared by FIFA to play for Ghana

Ex-England youth international midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong says he has been cleared by world football governing body FIFA to play for Ghana.

The revelation is a massive boost for the Black Stars with just about seven weeks before the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan at English side Charlton, applied to FIFA last year to enable him switch nationality to play for his country of birth.

His switch became a long drawn-out saga until last month when the Northern Irish FA supplied the remaining documents for his change of allegiance to be ratified.

GHANASoccernet.com exclusively reported on Tuesday reported that FIFA was set to ratify his nationality switch after submitting all the documents required for the ex-England youth to its Player Status Committee for its endorsement.

Now the player has confirmed that FIFA has approved the switch to enable him play for the Black Stars saying he is delighted by the chance to play for his country.

"Its official Frimpong can now play for the Ghana Black Stars. Finally soo happy," Frimpong said on his official Twitter page.

This means the 20-year-old midfielder is available for coach Kwesi Appiah to name him in his squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Frimpong had played for the English U-16 and U-17 teams.

He recently returned to full fitness after recovering from a serious knee injury last term while on loan at Wolves in February.

Arsenal have sent him out on loan to Charlton for him to get more playing time and he made his debut at the weekend.
