Younger Dong-Bortey witnessed May 9 disaster

Midfielder Bernard Dong-Bortey says he always feels haunted whenever thoughts of the infamous May 9 disaster comes into mind.
The 29-year-old provided the vital assist that led to the contr0vercia Ishmael Addo goal for Hearts of Oak in the big Ghanaian derby win over Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2011 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Irate fans however started throwing missiles onto the pitch in protest of the referee’s decision to turn down an offside flag by the assistant leading to the goal.
The police reacted by firing tear gas into the protesting crowd of which consequences overwhelmed the insufficient medical detail present at the game – leading to the unfortunate death of 127 people.
And Bortey who now plays for Aduana Stars says the tragedy lingers on even after eleven years of its occurrence.
“I feel very bad whenever I think about it. I try very much to forget and many even put the blame on me but I find it very difficult to forget it,” he told Sky Power.
“I also don’t think we have done enough to prevent it from ever happening.
“The recent attacks in Cape Coast in Aduana’s win over Dwarfs is an evident prove of our frailties and it will be in our own interest to rectify it before its too late.”
