Crystal Palace call up Kwesi Appiah for Southampton clash - before realising Ghana striker is ineligible
Kwesi Appiah has not been registered in the squad to play in the Premier League

Ghana striker Kwesi Appiah saved his English Premier League club Crystal Palace from an embarrassing gaffe after they included him in their squad to face Southampton - before realising he was ineligible.

The talented 24-year-old marksman, who shot Ghana to the Africa Cup of Nations Final, had been called upon by the Eagles for the trip to St Mary's on Wednesday night.

It was only when Appiah pointed out to Palace that he had not been included in their 25-man squad for the second half of the season that they were alerted to their mistake.

It means the rising star is set to have clubs clamouring to take him on loan again - despite scoring eight goals in 23 games for Cambridge United during the first half of the campaign.

The spree earned him a call-up for January's Africa Cup of Nations from Ghana coach Avram Grant under whom Appiah impressed in Equatorial Guinea.

The frontman made a stunning debut in the country's 2–1 win over South Africa. He went on to score his first international goal in Ghana's quarter-final win over Guinea.

The Black Stars were beaten in the Final on penalties by the Ivory Coast.

Appiah's heroics, however, were not enough, for him to included in Alan Pardew's plans for the rest of Palace's Premier League campaign.

Appiah will now be able to exercise his right to quit the club on a free transfer at the end of the season if they do not take up an option for a new deal by April 1.
