Egypt stay on top despite Zambia draw PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 January 2008

ImageA last-gasp equaliser from Chris Katongo enabled Zambia to hold Egypt to a 1-1 draw at the African Cup of Nations in Kumasi on Wednesday.

But the result was not enough to rescue Zambia from elimination and confirmed Egypt as Group C winners, with Cameroon coming second despite a 3-0 win over group whipping-boys Sudan.

Amr Zaki scored with a well-taken volley after 15 minutes in another solid display by the defending champions, who finished with seven points, one more than the Indomitable Lions.

The Pharaohs were, however, caught out after a sustained period of pressure when Katongo blasted home at Essam Al-Hadary's near post after evading former Sheffield United defender Ahmed Fathi.
