CONFIRMED: Over 100 Ghanaian supporters went AWOL during 2014 World Cup
Over 100 Ghanaian supporters did not return from Brazil

Ex Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has confirmed over 100 Ghanaian supporters sponsored to go watch the 2014 World Cup did not return.

The Sports Ministry embarked on a corporate sponsorship drive to raise funds to cater for the airlifting, accommodation and feeding of Ghanaian fans to go support the Black Stars during the 2014 World Cup.

Over 200 Ghanaian supporters sought asylum in Brazil after the tournament under the false pretext of a religious conflict in Ghana.

The effects of the actions of the runaway supporters are still being felt with the recent mass refusal of visa applications by the Canadian High Commission in Ghana for Ghanaian fans who intended to travel for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Former Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has now confirmed over 100 Ghanaian supporters were unaccounted on the delegation’s return from Brazil.

“We observed at the camp that the numbers started going down. About 100 of them had left after the first week,” he told the 2014 World Cup Commission sitting on Monday.

“We were alarmed but the point I want to make is that not all of them came from the ones we took to Brazil.

“By the time we were leaving [returning from Brazil], around a 100 plus were unaccounted for.

“These supporters have travelled all over to support the Black Stars and they always came back.

“They travel, they go and come and when they bring their passport you see their record.

“So I didn’t expected that with all due respect go to Brazil and not come back.”
