Ghana defender John Mensah to be axed for 2013 Africa Cup of Nations

Posted On Tuesday, 4th December 2012

John Mensah is likely to miss out on the party to the 2013 Nations Cup

Ghana defender John Mensah could miss next year’s African Cup of Nations due to clublessness.

The 30-year-old has remained inactive since he was released by French giants Olympique Lyon in June.

The strong centre-back is racing against time to find a new club and start a kicking ball before he will be considered for the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has insisted only players who are playing competitive football would be called up for international duty, meaning the former Ghana captain could miss the boat to South Africa.

The former Sunderland man has remained a tall figure in defence for the Ghanaians but recurrent injuries has taken a toll on his career.

The potential absence of the towering defender will mean Isaac Vorsah and in-form John Boye will be relied upon to keep strikers in check at the continental showpiece.

Mensah has 78 senior caps and currently training with former side Rennes to keep his shape.

a captain under whose reign the team divided. his, is gratitude and a legendry farewell, not a call up.

  2. Niki says:

Loooks like it’s a bloody dry news day!

  3. Dr Who says:

Frankly,a fit but clubless John Mensah is better than Lee Addy and Akaminko. He can be a better substitute for Boye and Vorsah.

  4. Kwame Adu-Gyamfi says:

He is still good and one of our best defenders. During the world cup, most of New Zealand’s team were clubless and they never lost a match, they only tied.

  5. Sergeant says:

John Mensah has been our most dedicated & committed central defender. His experience at previous AFCONs & at the WC should be tapped at AFCON 2013 especially when we dont have reliable options.Afterall he wouldn‘t be the first unattached player to play for the BS.

  6. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

IF HE IS FIT AND CAN PLAY, TAKE HIM. YOU DONT HAVE TI START HIM, BUT PERHAPS COME IN AFTER THE HALF TIME TO SECURE WINS AND ORGANIZE THE DEFENDERS …20 MINUTES TILL THE GAME ENDS. JOHN MENSAH WAS OUR LEADING GOALSCORER AT AFCON 2012, BARELY A YEAR AGO. I BELIEVE HIS EXPERIENCE SUPERCEEDS SO MUCH. RETIRE DEREK BOATENG AND PAINSTIL AND TAKE JOHN MENSAH WITH YOU.

  7. real sabacious says:

i doubt the intergrity of Akwasi Appiah, whats the difference between clubless john mensah and derek boateng and inkoom who have spectators for dnipro throughout the season?atleast john mensah is training with rennes.i’m just buttressing my point to show how inconsistent AA is and the favouritism and nepotism some of us have been talking about. No John mensah no inkoom and derek period!!!!!!!!!!!

    • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

      REAL, I DISAGREE
      JOHN MENSAH IS A CAPTAIN
IN AFCON 2012 HE WAS OUR LEADING GOAL SCORER
HE IS A VERY EXPERIENCED DEFENDER WHO CAN HELP OUR DEFENDERS ESP IN CRUCIAL SITUATIONS.
HE IS BY FAR OUR BEST DEFENDER IN OVER A DECADE
IF FIT AND CAN EVEN PLAY A FULL 45MINUTES, PLEASE TAKE HIM.
IF HE WERE IN THE ARMY AS A SOLDIER, HE COULD KILL 5 MEN WITH 1 BULLET.

I CANT SAY THE SAME FOR PAINSTIL AND DEREK BOATENG.
PAINSTIL IS AN EXPERT AT CATCHING UNECESSARY SUULIA, LATE DEFENDING, PLUS OWN GOALASSOS. DEREK BOATENG AS WE ALL KNOW IS PATAPAA, ANGRY PLAYER WHO HAS LOST HIS EDGE. THESE 2 MUST BE RETIRED FROM NATIONAL DUTY. THEREFORE, AA SHOULD ADD HIM TO TH SQUAD. EXPERIENCE IS EARNED. U CANT PAY FOR THAT..

  8. the truth says:

i don’t usually endorse the inclusion of old and club-less players but john mensah is better than 70 percent of players in the blackstars. He was the reason we even managed to get far in the last afcon. we should include him for at least his leadership and mentor-ship

  9. Ghanaman says:

NO John mensah… Let him earn his place!!!

  10. anokwale says:

Too bad. I like him, but if he is inactive and suffering from injuries, he might have to go.

  11. real sabacious says:

@GH FUO,THINK BIG.u got me wrong,i mean the situation of john mensah is the same with inkoom and derek.asuch if john mensah is not going, then the same should apply to inkoom and derek.three of them have all been inactive all season

  12. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

INK WHO?..INKOOM WENT TO A WCUP N NATIONS CUP 2012 N EMBARRASSED HIMSELF. THIS WAS WHEN HE WAS ACTIVE AT CLUB LEVEL. NOW, HE BARELY PLAYS A U STILL THINK HE DESERVES A CALL UP? JOHN MENSAH WAS QUITE INACTIVE LAST YEAR WHEN HE PLAYED AT AFCON 2012 N SCORED 3 GOALS….HOW MANY GOOALS DID DEDE, GYAN N AGYEMANG BADU SCORE? A DEFENDER SCORED MORE GOALS THAN THOSE PLAYERS CLOSER TO THE NET…LOL. IF I WERE AA,I WILL TAKE JM EVEN ON 1 LEG…

  13. Blow says:

Drop Mensah at your own peril AA. A half fit Mensah is better than most of our defenders if not all.The wisest thing to do is to get a replacement in case of injury. Drogba, Victor Moses, Katongo are all coming to the party and hoping Aful, Opare and Inkoom could stand the test of time.
