Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila claims his substitution in the friendly match against Japan on Tuesday was necessitated because of an injury.
The Mamelodi Sundowns central defender was solid at the back for Ghana in the first half of the match which eventually ended in a 3-1 defeat.
Sumaila helped to keep the Black Stars 1-0 lead intact by the end of the first half but was strangely replaced at the restart by Jonathan Mensah.
Ghana subsequently conceded three goals to lose 3-1 to Japan in Yokohama.
Sumaila has now revealed he was changed because of an unspecified injury with questions mounting over the substitutions made by coach Akwasi Appiah in the friendly defeat.
“I felt some pains so I couldn’t continue with the second half,” he told Peace FM.
“It felt quite disappointed because I believed I was doing well during that time.
“But one cannot play with an injury so I had to confirm to the coach to change me.”
