Heart of Lions stunned Asante Kotoko in Kumasi on Wednesday

Asante Kotoko slumped to a shocking 1-0 defeat to Heart of Lions on the same day the new Premier League trophy was unveiled to the fans on Wednesday.

The Kotoko fans were buzzing at the Baba Yara Stadium over the arrival of the new Premier League trophy which was on show for the first time since its acquisition earlier in the week.

Their excitement was however piped down after 90 minutes with Lions stunning them in the Ghanaian top flight.

The champions fell back early in the second half with Hudu Yakubu coolly slotting home from the spot.

Kotoko could have taken the lead in the first half after Ben Adama had pulled the ball back for Jordan Opoku but the resulting shot from Ghana’s CHAN star was way off target.

Lions however kept their discipline to grind out a goalless result at the end of halftime – paving the way for a mini fanfare at the stadium with the trophy unveiling ceremony.

Kotoko however made the worst possible start to the second half as defender Kwabena Edusei conceded a penalty – much to the dismay of the home fans.

Hudu Yakubu stepped up and scored but just as goalkeeper Joseph Addo got some of the ball but was not enough to keep the ferocious strike out.

Kotoko’s lead at the top of the Premier League has now been cut to eight points with Hearts of Oak beating AshantiGold in the other Premier League fixture in Accra.
