Malawi Sports Minister Enock Chihana addressing the players during trainig at CIVO stadium.
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has certified Civo Stadium fit to host Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Malawi and Ghana.
Caf’s Chief Security Officer Musonye granted the go-ahead on the afternoon of Thursday, after inspecting the 25,000 capacity stadium in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.
Present during the inspection were central region based Football Association of Malawi officials and stadium authorities, who were all smiles after the Caf official indicated the stadium was in good condition to host the high profile match.
“This is a great relief to us. We could have been caught up in a big fix had the Confederation declared the stadium unfit. But we knew all was well basing on the improvements that have been made on the stadium,” said one of the Fam officials present.
Apart from the problems that led to the closure of Kamuzu Stadum in Blantyre, there have equally been some concerns on condition of Civo Stadium, more especially on the security of players and match officials as they move in between the dressing room and the field of
play.
However, after closing Kamuzu Stadium government has addressed the issue of security by covering the passage used by players and officials when entering the field from the dressing rooms.
The sanitation system at the stadium has also been improved and the playing turf is all covered by green grass.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars arrives at Kamuzu International Airport, seating on a 2-0 cushion from their first leg home win.
