Ghana midfielder Michael Essien suffered a knee injury on Friday, the first day of full training with Chelsea this season, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm.

The English side have confirmed that the Black Stars powerhouse suffered the injury on his right knee while in pre-season training in Cobham, the club's training ground.

A Chelsea statement said: "Michael Essien suffered an injury to his right knee during training this week.

"He will undergo tests over the next few days to determine the extent of that injury. Until we have the full results of those tests we will not be commenting further."

The tests will determine the extent of injury as Chelsea want to avoid specualtion over the seriousness on the injury.

He suffered the injury at the same place that ruled him out of last year's World Cup in South Africa and most parts of the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.

Essien has been troubled by knee injuries in the past and it has been suggested that the problems have decreased his impact as a player.

The 28-year-old was unavailable for a large chunk of the 2008/09 season due to cruciate knee ligament damage.

Essien then suffered a medial ligament injury at the African Nations Cup last year and missed the 2010 World Cup as a consequence.

GHANAsoccernet.com's prayers are with Michael and we pray the inury is not serious to ensure a speedy recovery.
