Yakubu Mohammed has been signed by Maritzburg United.

South African top-flight side Maritzburg United have unveiled striker Yakabu Mohammed as one of their new players for the next season after PSL rivals Orlando Pirates snubbed the Ghanaian claiming he lacked fitness.

The AshantiGold player was one of Maritzburg's six new signings at a ceremony on Wednesday morning.

He was outdoored alongside Nhlanhla Vilakazi from Ajax Cape Town, Thokozani Sekotlong from University of Pretoria, Robyn Johannes from Orlando Pirates, Ashley Hartog from SuperSport United and Thamsanqa Mkhize from Golden Arrows.

"The first player unveiled is Ghanaian Striker, Yakubu Mohamed who has been signed from Ashanti Gold," the club's official Twitter account confirmed.

"Yakubu Mohammed will wear the number 9 Jersey at the club this season. #Teamofchoice #Newsignings."

The 24-year-old finished last season's Ghana Premier League as second joint topscorer with 14 goals.

Mohammed trained with fellow PSL side Orlando Pirates but the Bucs refused to sign him claiming he lacked stamina.

He has been signed by the Pietermaritzburg-based side as a replacement for Cuthbert Malajila who has moved to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Moahmmed will join compatriots Awal Mohammed and Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi.

Mohammed is a burly striker and has been described as being “built like a rock”.

He has grown a reputation for scoring spectacular goals and is something of a free-kick specialist and packs a punch with his shots, but is also good in the air.

His finishing as improved immeasurably in the last few seasons and he has been a leading scorer in the Ghana Premier League.

Not to be confused with a number of players in Ghana with the same name, he will be 23 next month and is a former national Under-23 player, as well as the Ghana B side.

He has been handed the No 9 jersey at the club and is seen as a replacement for the Zimbabwean Cuthbert Malajila, who joined Mamelodi Sundowns.
