Ghana handed tough draw to face Zambia, Sudan in 2014 World Cup qualifiers

Published on: 30 July 2011

Ghana were handed a tough task to qualify for the 2014 when they were drawn to play Zambia, Sudan and Lesotho or Burundi in the second phase of the qualifiers.

The four-time African champions recorded a double over Sudan in the eliminators to the 2010 edition staged in South Africa.

But the North Africans have improved since then and in October last year, held the Black Stars to a shock barren draw at the Baba Yara Stadium in the on-going 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Black Stars last played Zambia in 20o9 in an international friendly and managed a 4-1 win.

The Lesotho and Burundi first round qualifier will be played in the period 11-15 November 2011.

Ghana beat Lesotho 3-0 at home and 3-2 away in the first phase of the combined 2010 Nations Cup/World Cup qualifiers.

Burundi thwarted Ghana's qualification to the 1994 Fifa World Cup finals held in the United States after beating the Black Stars 1-0 in Bujumbura in October 1992 in the first leg.

Ghana, led by Otto Pfister, revenged by beating Les Hirondelles by the same scoreline in Kumasi but ended up finishing one point behind Algeria in the three-team table.

The matches will be held between the period 1 June 2012 to 10 September 2013.

The Black Stars must top the pool to enter the third qualifying round where a draw will split the 10 group winners into five two-leg ties.

The aggregate winners will then qualify for the finals.
