Asamoah Gyan is the new permanent Black Stars captain
Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has announced that Asamoah Gyan has been appointed permanent captain of the Black Stars.
This follows the decision to elevate John Mensah to the role of a General Captain of the senior national team.
“I have the pleasure of announcing that defender John Mensah has been elevated to the General Captain of the Black Stars,” Kwesi Appiah said in a statement.
“Subsequently, I have appointed Asamoah Gyan as the permanent captain of the Black Stars.
“John Mensah remains an integral member of the Black Stars.
“I urge all players to give the necessary support to Asamoah Gyan to help Ghana achieve success in our future challenges.”

Congrats to Akwasi appiah, but is it not confirming what footy-Ghana announced some few weeks ago, that asamoah gyan was going to captain the stars in the Malawi game & afterwards will be made the substantive captain for the afcon? The FA came out to rubbish that report & even went ahead to posit that John mensah remains the captain & Michael Essen (who has played only one game in two yrs) was the deputy? Hmmm shame on them….. once again congrats to gyan, he should step into the shoes & lead Ghana to the promised land……

Did you think about your question or it came out as a mistake, why ii a coach ask a clubless player on whether remain captain or not while not playing? Did you ask John Mensah, how much he paid so he owns the captaincy?
I guess AA has indirectly retired John Mensah forcefully from the Black Stars team. I have never seen two captains of the same national team. My understanding is that the General captain position is higher than that of the permanent captain of the team. My confusion stems from the fact that if the two captains are to feature in the same game, who wears the captain armband? What would be the role of the general captain in the team? Would the roles if the general and the permanent captains not conflict? All the same congrats to Gyan but I hope he is able to maintain the unity and stability of the team as we head into AFCON 2013.
Personally i’ve no problem with the decison but my concern is the attitude of Gyan nowadays.Been a captain goes with responsibilities,asuch for Gyan to be on top of his game and bear the burden as a captain,he better move from the below average U.A.E to much toughier league to be in top shape.congrat bro!

So coaches have the freedom and liberty to choose whom they want to be captains of their teams. How come when Otto Pfistter made the maestro, ABEDI PELE, the captain it did not go down well with many people even till now. Gyan is the most out-form player of all, playing in the weakest league of all the B/S players in the squad. On top of that, he’ always missing penalties and shit. Who respects him still?
Why not Muntari? He’s respected by all, plays with AC Milan and is very influential in the dressing room. He should captain, not arab gyan.
People who deserved to wear the armband are ex: Stephen Appiah, Essien and John Mensah. Gyan has no characteristics, charisma and confidence of the above mentioned names. He’s actually under performing now in comparison to his previous years with the national team.. Why Now? On what Merit? As much as I love the BS – I personally think this is a bad decision and frankly don’t see anyone in the team who deserves the captain role.. I would recommend Annan but I’m not sure how confident he is as a motivator or inspirational leader.. The coach gave Gyan the armband cuz he’s able to sing? WOW..

The position of captain cannot be given to players who are not consistent. irrespective of the criticisms laid on Gyan,he has still been consistent for the previous yrs and i hope he will continue to be. goodluck Gyan. On what merit did coach A.A appoint Asamoah Gyan to be the captain? I think this is a bad call. The kind that can breed division in the team.By virtue, A.G is not inspirational. He does not have moral capital in the Ghanaian society due to the mishaps in South Africa and at the Afcon 2012. Some team members secretly despise him . I hope decision could reversed to prevent a future disappointments.

It is time Ghanaian have to support Gyan and entire black stars team , I m sure Gyan will respect his senior men in the team, let pray for the team and he can win trophies for Ghana , Stephen appiah was the captian , meanwhile samuel Osei kuffour and Eric addo and hans adu serpei were there as a team mate , leadership qualities sometimes do not mean if you are the aged automatically you should capt the team. When Stephen Appiah came in there were alot of senior men in the team but with his good leadership , he was able to excel so all that matters now ia that Gyan will know that he ia a leader and should acts as one one.
