Andre Ayew thrown out of Ghana's Nations Cup squad

Posted On Monday, 7th January 2013

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has axed midfielder Andre Ayew from his squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Olympique Marseille star, who picked up a hamstring injury in training last week, failed to meet Saturday’s deadline for players to report for Ghana’s pre-tournament training camp in Abu Dhabi.

A statement on the Ghana FA website read: “I have decided to exclude midfielder Andre Ayew from the Ghana squad for the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

“Following Andre’s inability to join the Black Stars squad by Monday morning for Ghana’s team doctors to assess the extent of his injury and fitness for the tournament, I have decided to work only with the players currently in camp.

“All the players were given the deadline of Saturday to report to camp in Abu Dhabi unfortunately Andre did not turn up despite being released by his club and air tickets provided by the GFA for him to travel from France to beat the deadline.

“As he did not turn up by Saturday night, I ordered for him to be contacted over his absence but he said he could not depart from France because he was seeing his doctors.

“The uncertainty over Andre’s fitness started when the GFA received a letter from his club side Marseille that he had had a hamstring injury so could not meet the GFA deadline of Saturday 5th January 2013 for reporting to camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

“In response the GFA wished the player a speedy recovery and requested him to report to camp by the Saturday 5th January 2013 deadline and submit himself to the medical team of the Black Stars for examination and if possible for treatment.

“The club wrote back to the GFA confirming it had released the player to join the Black Stars at its camp in Abu Dhabi on Saturday 5th January 2013.

“Unfortunately, Andre failed to report to camp and indicated that owing to the treatment he was receiving from his doctor he would report to camp on Wednesday 9th January 2013.

“He was further advised to endeavor to report to the camp by latest Monday 7th January 2013 because Wednesday 9th January 2013 was the deadline for submission of the list of 23 players to Caf.

“As Andre plans to arrive on Tuesday it means he would be unable to join any of my six training sessions before CAF’s Wednesday deadline for the submission of the final squad.

“In line with my vision of taking only fit players for the Africa Cup of Nations, I have decided that to work only with the players currently in camp.

“I have personally explained the rationale behind the decision to Andre and I will continue to count on him in future matches if he is fit.”

hahahaha yes! now sit back and watch how atsu in the 10 jersey would deliver us the trophy. oh too known average andre ayew when was the last time u scored a goal for bs yet u think you are a player we’ve nt had b4 lmao. Faaaaaaaark You!!

  2. yopoo says:

Hell no we know u hav a problem with Abedi so now are u trying to gain some revenge on his kids? Mr coach you are full of shit watch out the way you are playing with our hearts.Even Adolf Hitlar time ended.

  3. junior mafia says:

Blessin in disguise kwadwo on the left atsu on the right..bad move dede

  4. Ansong says:

THE HATRED THIS KUMASI COACH HABOURS AGAINST THE LEGEND ABEDI DURING THE 90′S HAS BECOME APPERANT…BECAUSE HE LEFT EVERY STONE UNTURNED TO MAKE SURE BOTH SONS ARE SACKED FROM THE BLACK STARS CAMP.DO YOU REALLY THINK GHANA CAN WIN ANY CUP WITH THIS UNQUALIFIED COACH? WISE UP^

    • Redd says:

My brother, these kumasi coaches have finally destroyed the BS and come AFCON 2013 it will be buried. You can alter the rules for an over-the-bar player like asamoah gyan and even reward him with the captaincy of our beloved stars so that he can go ahead and kill more ghanaians yet u drop a player who gives his all and is the brightest spot in our team just bcos he was late in showing up.Lets see how u will perform.

  5. yopoo says:

I don’t personally know what Nyantekyi saw in you and gave you this Job you are too much of yourself. If we talk of good local coach then where is Tetteh?

  6. Union Leader says:

This is a rash decision by the coaches. I can only hope they know what they are doing. Andre is a special player and we need him for this tournament. He’s one of those players a coach can count on even if half fit. Akwasi Appiah needs to rethink this.

  7. Bond says:

In 2010 afcon most of the big stars were absent and that gave u Dede the breakthrough. Now itz time 4 someone else breakthrough. It might be blessing in disguise. Seriously Dede and Akwesi Appiah all have big egos that seriously needs to be controlled

  8. Jade black says:

This is certainly not good,Andre is an influential member of the squad and i just hope the decision of axing him can be changed:)

    • Sampo says:

Andre is more useful to the black Stars than that egoistic misfit of a coach. He now has the team he wanted from the beginning ( minus the Ayews). He should deliver the trophy now.

  9. Bond says:

Inviting an average jordan to the black stars when he does not merit it is the cause of all this. Jordan should have been left to play 4 France,he is too timid for the African play.jux hoping Atsu, KASA, Yiadom and Wakaso will get the job done..we need Dede though but Black Star still goes on. UP GHANA, UP BLACK STARS

  10. junior mafia says:

Blak stars is not a one man team al players were given a deadline ayews was even extended n he fails to show up,com n let the team doctors watch u too e turn matter,do u want gg to cry if he in fine if not we move on..he myt even underprrform if we force him..^^

  11. Bond says:

2 down, 1 more to go,who will be the last casualty, i seriously think rabiu mohammed has no work to do with the BS. He needs to be axed out.

  12. Bemol says:

Big up to kwesi appiah; no one is bigger than #blackstar it’s all about 11 vs 11 not 1 vs 11. Atsu, kwadwo, annan, vorsah, boye, muhammed, derek, jonathan etc gud luck.

  13. wat at all has he seen.He should av patience in life.I think dats a bold step taken by coach akwasi appiah

  14. matteo says:

a half fit dede is far better than most of ur players

  15. Rasa says:

You see why it is unwise to use a local coach? What is wrong with allowing him to see his doctors for treatment. How can you force him to stop treatment and report on time just like any other player. This coach will definitely pay for this. Asamoah Gyan missed the deadline because he was planning a funeral and that was okay.

  16. Rasa says:

Kwesi Appiah should tell us what Ghana achieved under his captaincy. No wonder he was axed from the black stars in 92. He and his Kumasi players went ahead and destroyed the team out of envy for Abedi Pele. He is back again to mess the team up. Thank God that he will be sacked before the team resumes the World Cup qualifiers.

  17. Words says:

    Simple.
    The coach is in charge.
    I support u fully.

    • Sam says:

True talk. He is only in charge when it concerns the Ayews. Asamoah Gyan took a long leave only to be made captain on the first day of his return. That is a coach in charge. Is that the way to handle an injured player? You try to compel him to stop treatment with his doctors and fly all the way to UAE. Did they consider the impact that break in treatment could have on his future career. Their reaction to the letter from marseille even told a story of vindictiveness. Nyantekyi should wise up before this coach destroys the team. He is a bad manager of men aside his tactical bankruptcy. Is this the first time a player is suffering an injury at the 11th hour? Asamoah Gyan had a similar situation before AFCON 12. Did they treat him the same way?

  18. jon bature says:

i 4see a first round elimination from can2013 and dat kumasi coach who never played professional futball and with no proper cert will be dismissed!

  19. Abato says:

I only hope the end justifies the means! Otherwise, this issue would be revisited passionately after the tournament. I was one of those who thought it was nonsensical to be talking of the coach’s so called hatred for one player or the other. But I am becoming alarmed at how Kwasi Appiah seems only to be doing his work when it comes to the Ayews. It is curious! For now, may the Cup be Ghana’s.

  20. Ignatius says:

    That is,superb decision……

  21. lalasu says:

When will some people will be reasonable n criticise reasonably. how can u say that Kwasi Appiah had a problem with Abedi n that he is displacing on his kids…this is cheap criticism, please grow up n wise up those of u who are doing this cheap cheap contribution. l wonder if u listen to other sports news or u sit down for friends to listen n tell u…Dede was given deadline to report for examination by the team doctors n he chose to report on a day he wanted. listen to news n read articles urself n stop dwelling on past issues n hear say.

  22. yaw2 says:

Forward in a progress, bold move by AA.We wish you speedy recovery. Is not too late to bring Quincy Owusu-Abeyie back.He brings more fire power to Ghana attack.

  23. mukmin says:

No problem Dede has been dropped that’s AA decision as coach if delivers the cup all will be forgotten if not it’s off with his head.

    • dadaba gonshots says:

@Mukimin, the only issue we have is that Nyantakyi sys even if the coach flops at AFCON we still stay with him. This statement to me is very unfortunate. You have picked a coach, just give him a target. How can you say this? He now has the impudence to push through his agenda against the Ayews. ah ah ah ah! Why is this coach doing this? I am even tired of talking about him, Nyaa coach with a Nyaa GFA.

  24. Ghanaman says:

Rasa just shut up!! Gyan is in camp and has been in camp! Dede wants to be above the rules and we can’t have that. He is injured anyway so, we will see him during the world cup qualifiers!!

    • Sampo says:

See who is talking!! Ghanaman, you should rather shut up. What is wrong with an injured player seeking medical treatment. He informed the GFA of when he would be available. I have no problem with he being dropped if unfit. The tone of AA’s letter reveals his lack of regard for the player and the conspiracy theory. A good coach will be interested in his recovery rather than casting insinuations. That is certainly bad leadership.

  25. mate says:

Any way we already have wakaso and atsu for the left wing and we have adomah and solomon asante for the right wing.kwadwo asamoah and rabiu can play the number 10 role so I don’t think we will really miss him too. Much.

  26. NANA YAW says:

    WOW Such a wise decision..!

  27. Coconutman says:

Good decision by the Coach. Dede is injured and needs time to recover. Why carry an injured player in such an important tournament. It is better to use healthy players. The Coach learned his lesson from AFCON 2012 when they took Asamoah Gyan who was not fully recovered from a hamstring injury.

Speedy recovery to Dede and Go Black Stars!

  28. Stephen says:

Obviously I am not sure how this will effect our team. But it just seems that the managing team in the Black Stars behave very foolishly to seem as if they are ‘hard’. The guy is not saying that he will not turn up, but he is saying that the injury he contracted at Marseille is still being treated. For all we know, he may not have confidence in the Black Star Medical Team to treat the injury. They need to exercise common sense.

  29. Kwaku Tee says:

Andre and Jordan should have been made to know that as members of the BS they are part of a community right from the on set and as such they should comport themselves and respect whatever decision that is taken concerning the team.Management of these players was poor right from the beginning.

  30. IFE says:

Hahahahahaha so all dos zambians dat do rub dere mouth on dis site have shout d hell of dere mouth.

  31. IFE says:

Hahahahahaha so all dos zambians dat do ruub dere mouth on dis site have shouut d helll of dere mouth.

  32. Ngake says:

Am Zambian and i know Zambians are not liked on this site, but as a football lover and having lived in Ghana for a couple of years i share some sentiment for Ghanain football. The decision to drop Andre Ayew whether good or not is a big blow. To win anything in football you need your best players, just look at Arsenal F.C in England as an example. This decision also has the potential to divide the camp in two. We watched GhanaBS play in Ndola, Zambia without this boy and they are not the same. All the best all the same – Medase!

    • Chibesa says:

@ Ngake. The Coach is not sure of the fitness of Dede. It is also in the interest of the player to allow him to heal instead of forcing him to play and aggravate the injury.I watched the Zambia-Ghana match at Mwanawasa stadium and i think the tricky boy called christian Atsu who only came in as a late substitute can do wonders for the black stars.

  33. alaha says:

Great decision by all standards. Now BS will play a more compact football with good team spirit.Dede is not even our best player in europe.Ghanaians shld stop displaying their palpable ignorances.k.asamoah n atsu will rise to d occasion.we don’t need individualism in our team.

  34. Kwab says:

Wakaso on the left, Atsu playing number 10, Adomah on the right and Kwadwo Asamoah pairing Annan in the midfield as the deep lying playmaker. Simple. Lineup may be even better that way lol

  35. samora says:

Its all Good let’s wait and see what happens. This might be Ghana’s year You know GOD makes a way where there is no way

  36. Jhay khummy® says:

black stars line up 4-2-3-1 KWARASEY PAINTSIL BOYE VORSAH KISSI D.BOATENG BADU K.ASAMOAH YIADOM ATSU GYAN

  37. Mojahadine says:

This is a brilliant decision by Akwesi Appiah. This is how you find out about other players. He is injured, he cannot play, no need for him to show up in camp. I applaud you for your quick decision. I never believed that Akwesi Appiah can ever make a decision like that. Now an opportunity to someone who is hungry to show their skills.

  38. bawah says:

Marseille confirmed!Andre Ayew is injured and needs time to recover. Good decision by Coach Appiah. Do not carry an injured player to the AFCON: Take and use healthy players. Appiah learned his lessons from the previous AFCON and world cup when they took Asamoah Gyan together with SERBIAN doctors to cure his hamstring injuries: he missed a penalty. He will feature for the World cup.

  39. Chu says:

The divisive factors are all washed out completely. i support coach 100%. now LET DO THIS THING (GTA 3 bomb the base)

  40. J. White says:

All those insulting the coach are DUMB! You’re the same people who would criticize him for taking unfit player to the tournament. The guy is injured and not sure if he can recover in time. We’ve done this in the past and it didn’t work: e.g., Sheila Illiasu, Essien, and Asamoah Gyan in the CAN 2008, 2010, and 2012 respectively. What is the point of taking an unfit player to a tournament when there are fit players around?

  41. original says:

naaaa that is not how it should be dede is a fine player n those who are insulting AA should stop.

  42. Kwame PITO says:

All those accusing the Coach should SHUTUP! I am a staunch supporter of Andre Ayew because the player has incredible ball control and good in the air around the 18yard box for a player of his height. But this decision by A.A is for the collective. I am sad Ghana will not be parading its full stars but we can still support the team. Whether we win or lose. Afcon 2013 here we come!
Disclaimer: As much as you support The Blackstars for the cup, leave room in your heart for the negative heartattack emotions of a painful exit. :-D

  43. Modern Guy says:

Akwasi Appiah is a foolish man. How do you expect the young man to join any of your “six training sessions” when he is injured. Did you even train during your playing days when you were injured? And to those of you castigating the young lad, you are all buffoons. Remember in the last AFCON, even with a shoulder injury, he carried on like the brave warrior he is. You have all soon forgotten. He is injured, why won’t you let him have have peace and try to read meaning into this? You would be the same people to criticize him when he doesn’t perform. I feel sorry for some of you and the way you display your hatred for Andre. Who Jah bless, no man curses.

    • Sam says:

What dumb ass, they made it clear for him to come so he can be assesed by the team doctors, and still didnt show up at the extension the gave him,but most importantly he is not fit. whats the big deal. All the players are in camp, he is not,and there is only one rule in the team for players to follow, theres no Andre rule, Gyan Rule and Dereck boateng rule and these are the players that beat the deadling to report to camp, hes no defferent and no better than any one in the team, everybody is to follow one rule and thats it.
He wouldnt report late to camp if his club wanted him to report at that deadline. He is not and didnt meet the deadline and thats it.

  44. Kalaba says:

Black Stars we expect you to bring Stars like ayew to Afcon not the unknown. Anyways, a multitalented nation should not panick i know ayew will be replaced but believe me his taent, skills will never be replaced. Hello…Team Chipolopolo is at full strength n will attack any team that comes on our way as a Mob and defend as a Mob without getting exhausted with a NO DIE ATTiTuDE. Best of luck Bstars

  45. JONES says:

What is the meaning of Kumasi coach and Kumasi players ahhhhhhba,an illiterate person will not even say this you peoples must grow up stupid fools.

  46. Kwame PITO says:

I would not be surprised if despite the Ayews missing, we still go on to the finals. The truth is with our many players we will find some one just good enough to fill Ayew’s boots but it will not be the same.

  47. nyamz says:

if my memory serves me right, silas tetteh excluded one player i forgot his name, who claimed he couldn’t pay some amount when they went for the under 20 world cup.many are those who complained about his act,but Ghana finally won the cup.so please let the coach do his job

  48. matteo says:

pls if u all don’t ayew was on fit in fact his leg was swollen wen he captained da under 20 team against Brazil in 2009.wat shows he can’t play dis tym.poor decision by AA

  49. JOSH says:

    I support AA 100,000,000,000,000,000,000.00%

  50. Fiifi, Berlin says:

This whole confusion could have been prevented ,had the GFA or AA right from the start accepted the letter as it is from OM!(I thought, they had a fantastic relationship with each other) What is happening is simply unfortunate. It is revealing the the suspicion and mistrust that exist between the GFA and OM. It is also showing that all is not well between Ayew and the technical team, one should be bold to accept this and rectify the situation. What lowered the standard of the Green Eagles is gradually creeping into the Black Stars; THE GFA AND THE TECHNICAL TEAM KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!! The earlier they stop it the better! If they think they can’t handle the situation, they should quit and let other competent people come in and do the job!! UNITY(GFA AND A.A. LISTEN WELL WELL) IS THE KEY WORD.

    • Sampo says:

The GFA’s reaction to the OM letter speaks volumes. If they had been smart enough they would have liaised earlier with the team in order to prevent Dede from traveling back to france in the first place. They didn’t even sympathize with the player when it was reported that he had sustained an injury. If your player gets injured, do you try to cast insinuations on him or help him recover?. Is that the way they handle all others players who get injured. Fire burn AA and Nyantekyi. Ghana will never forgive them for what they have done to Ghana Black Stars. It was Dede’s goal that sent us to the semi finals of the last AFCON. He also scored the goal that qualified us to the quarter finals in Angola. His assist sent us to the quarter finals of the World Cup. God Damn AA and all those Abedi haters.

  51. gentle john says:

I knew and i always tell my friends that this Kwesi Appiah will destroy the Black Stars,we will not even qualify from the group stages and i hope he will sack for a better coach before we continue the world cup qualification matches.

    • Anokwale says:

This is the reality. There has to be discipline. This team needs hungry players who have something to prove. Ghana plays better as the underdogs. For this AFCON they just need to get out of the group stages and then the match ups will dictate how far they go in the knockout rounds. It is really all about hungry players. Names do not play. In 2008 we had a great team that could only manage 3rd place as the hosts. In 2010, a team that looked average on paper was able to make it to the final. It is all about the drive. I like Dede, but the coach must instill discipline so that no one feels too comfortable.

  52. Dessy says:

DEDE already wears no 10 jersey for his club,It makes no sense…What i want ghanaian to know is that Dede is an exceptional player,We dont have such qualities in any player in Black Star. The Quality he has that i admire him is the “Never say Die spirit”
If you observe during the under 20 final,he was the main inspiration behind the success,And he was like boys lets give up our very last best….And that is how he plays his ball. That is why sometimes i have problem with AA when he mishandle this delicate player

  53. popeyes says:

this man is not competent enough too make ghana a team to win at the afcon, see the kinda squad he made now, he’s axeing some key players we have in the team, you made the younger one fall out now because of this slight delay of andre arriving at your camp in Abu dhabi you’re a dropping him too, just know that as for ayew he’s commitment to the senior side is permanent, if you don’t take him in your squad, another cach will take him, and if unfortunate youmake ghana fall out at the group stages you will be fired, and all those money you’ve been taking from the GFA won’t be given to you anymore.

  54. mapjii says:

this AA will destroy BS ooo…..

  55. anokwale says:

This is what Ghanaians need. Discipline. No one is bigger than the Black Stars. Let us see new and hungry faces out there.

  56. wow says:

i like dede and i believe he is our best player but we also have other players to fill his position. lets see what new guy will rise up this time. play asamoah on the left, badu in the middle with derek, atsu at dede’s position, and yiadom, clottey and gyan upfront. we really have an excellent squad. dede see you at the wcq

  57. kuuku philly says:

I told u guys is a conspiracy….long live Ghana black stars without the ayews..

  58. Vim says:

shouts to @birch. Yo @sam hahahahahahahahahahaha ur mom enjoyed ma prick though. im back on on oooon. loool im saving this page

  59. ndasheny says:

FROM A NEUTRAL PERSPECTIVE I THINK YOUR COACH IS A COWARD AND THE WRITNG WAS ON THE WALL. IN MY OPINION IT IS PERSONAL DEDE IS THE MOST INFLUENCIAL PLAYER GHANA HAS AT THE MOMENT. I WAS HOPING FOR THE BEST GHANA TEAM AT AFCON.

  60. mukmin says:

@ dadaba gonshots its unfortunate the coach dropped Dede personally I think the coach has some resentment against him as well as the FA cos there’s clearly a double standard when it comes to dealing with certain players ie Gyan is rewarded with the captain’s armband after voluntarily quitting the team, as well as threatening to quit the team during the the can 08. The FA are always quick to beg him to rescind his decisions but quick to pounce on Dede and vilify him over the most trivial issues. Obviously they don’t want him or is brother on the team so the coach now has the team he wants he should deliver the cup or be fired immediately because we cannot risk our qualification for the world cupif he doesn’t deliver

  61. TYMMER says:

let me tell u if you did not knw. Abedi sleeps in Akwasi appiah’s house when he is in kumasi. Next time dont work on assumption to create such an impression. Let me also tell u that Akwasi is the first coach to given Jordan 90 mins of playing time in the black star

  62. fred says:

Axing Ayew is like sacking youself after the tournament.I know Ghana can not win this tournament without these players.

  63. family man says:

it has finally happened. when it was reported that some officials of the gfa held a meeting to find ways of frustrating the ayews, they came out to deny it. it is happening, god save ghana

  64. Don Justy says:

Only in Gh that when a confirmed injured player is dropped, it means hatred and a feud with his father is the cause.am disappointed in many of u above. is Dede Ayew the whole of BS? there is more to BS than Dede Ayew

  65. kimco says:

you guys appaul me seriously, not that this is the first time. ayew is our best player…? Then God help us all.

  66. kwame in london says:

i remember when Capello was coach of england the almighty Steven Gerard was injured he asked him to come for assessment and he went thats what we call professional not what dede has done and we still have people supporting him
