Boye to face club teammate Diarra in Ghana-Mali clash

John Boye to mark out Rennes teammate Cheick Diarra Fatamady

By Ameenu Shardow

Defender John Boye will face his club teammate Cheick Diarra Fatamady when Ghana plays Mali on Thursday.

The Black Stars are in desperate need of a win to boost their campaign after a slow start at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana threw away a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with DR Congo in Sunday’s Group B opener.

The Black Stars will now have to score against a talented Malian side while preventing them from scoring in order to clinch the vital win.

Boye, 25, will thus be tasked with stopping his Stade Rennais teammate Diarra when the Black Stars face the Eagles in the first game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Mali will however be a tough nut to crack as they aim to retain their lead in Group B haven secured a late 1-0 win in their opening group game against Niger.

It will be the third time in a space of a year both sides will be facing each other at the Nations Cup.

Ghana were 2-0 victors when the two teams first met at the group stage of the 2012 edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Mali however had the last laugh as they defeated the Black Stars by the same scoreline to clinch bronze.
