Former Asante Kotoko Executive Chairman Dr. Sarpong has made a chilling revelation of how he used the team’s medical officer to influence player selections.
The chartered accountant has finally broken his silence since resigning from the Ghana Premier League champions over two months ago.
Dr. Sarpong was heavily criticized for his selling policy during his three year reign despite landing several sponsorship deals for the club.
The businessman in a lengthy lecture on the challenges of football administration to the Rotary Club in Ghana on Tuesday revealed how he influenced player selection by using the team doctor in the interest of the club especially against uncompromising coaches.
“Sometimes you believe the coach is making a wrong call but you can’t interfere much,” Dr. Sarpong is quoted to have said at the lecture by Metrofmonline.com.
“Some of the coaches have their favourites in the team and therefore if the player is not well prepared to play a particular match, they still persist to use that player.
“I try as much not to interfere. In the three years I was at Kotoko I only visited the dressing room only once.
“When you try to chip in the coaches tell you they are the coaches and therefore should be left to do their work.
“Sometimes I have tell the team’s doctor to ensure he put a player down in their medical examination because you want to save a situation.
“That is the extent of how things get. Sometimes you have to use the team’s medical personnel.”
