John Mensah suffered an injury

Ghana defender John Mensah's chances of playing at the 2014 World Cup is hanging in the balance after suffering injury in the Slovakian top-flight at the weekend.

Mensah, who was hoping matches for Nitra would help him secure a place in Ghana's squad, suffered the injury setback on Saturday which has left his chances of playing in Brazil in doubt.

The 31-year-old was replaced after just 11 minutes into FK Nitra's game with Trencin in the Corgon Liga.

Details of the former Olympique Lyon and Sunderland center-back is expected to emerge on Monday as Nitra doctors will assess the extent of his injury.

Mensah, former Black Stars captain, was hoping to maintain his fitness and gain regular playing time and bid his time back into the Ghana national team.

But the latest injury could affect his chances of making the James Kwesi Appiah's squad for the World Cup.
