Ex Ghana captain Stephen Appiah believes the Black Stars are determined to excel beyond their previous campaigns at the World Cup in Brazil.

Ghana made it to the Round of 16 in their debut participation in the World Cup finals in 2006 in Germany.

The Black Stars bettered this record by going a place further by finishing in the quarter finals of the last edition four years ago in South Africa.

Then coached by Serbian Milovan Rajevac, the Black Stars were just a penalty kick away from making history by becoming the first African side to make it through to the semi finals of the tournament.

But striker Asamoah Gyan missed the vital kick against Uruguay – giving the South Americans the psychological edge going into the shootouts which they eventually won.

Former Ghana skipper Stephen Appiah who led the side to the previous World Cup campaigns however believes from his interactions with the players and officials that the current crop are even more determined to progress further this term.

“Talking to the players – and I had a chat with Kwesi Appiah – I think they want to do more than what we did in 2006 and 2010,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“So definitely the preparation is going to be different; it is going to be more than how we prepared in 2006 and 2010.

“I think there are going to be some friendly games in May, they will tour and we’ll see how it goes.

“We have tasted it once and twice and this time everybody, not only the players but Ghanaians, the coaches – everybody’s goal is to go further than the quarter finals.”

Ghana will open its campaign in the tournament that kicks off in June against the USA before facing Germany and Portugal in subsequent group games.
