Legendary Jones Attuquayefio acknowledging cheers
By Ameenu Shardow
John Paintsil struck late to earn a hard fought 3-3 scoreline for the Black Stars in the Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio Charity match on Friday.
The match which was played at the Accra Sports Stadium was in honour of the former Ghana international and coach for his immense contribution to Ghana football and beyound.
The game which saw the Black Stars coached by Maxwell Konadu line up against the Friends of Attuquayefio predominantly composed of the famous 64 Battalions squad of Hearts of Oak was also used to raise funds for the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Godwin Attram gave the Friends of Attuquayefio the lead after just 15 minutes but the Black Stars pulled level seven minutes later through Anthony Annan from the spot after Baffour Gyan was brought down in the box.
Stephen Appiah however restored the lead for the Friends of Attuquayefio side just two minutes after giving up on their lead.
He slotted home a neatly slid in pass from Attram to the delight of the gathering at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Daniel Opare got a golden chance to draw the Black Stars level again from the spot immediately after recess but he blasted his opportunity high into t skies.
The match later on needed to be halted for 15 minutes as the flood lights at the Accra Sports Stadium went off.
The resumed on a sluggish pace to the advantage of the much younger Black Stars side as Kwame Quansah atoned for Opare’s penalty miss to finish off a solo effort to ensure parity in the game.
Bernard Dong-Bortey then came off the substitutes bench to once again edge the Friends of Attuquayefio side ahead but just like the Phoenix, the Black Stars rose from the ashes to equalize through captain of the day John Paintsil to finish the game 3-3 as the stronger side.
