Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah sends strong signals after squad shake-up

Posted On Tuesday, 2nd October 2012

Kwesi Appiah has rewarded active players with call-ups for AFCON qualifier

Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has rewarded regular club first team players with call-ups in his latest Black Stars squad.

Notable names in his 21-man squad to face Malawi this month in the second leg final 2013 Nations Cup qualifier includes Espanyol’s Mubarak Wakaso and Vitoria Guimaraes’ David Addy.

Also, John Paintsil and Evian TG duo Jonathan Mensah and Rabiu Mohammed have been recalled after recent impressive displays in the Israeli and French top-flight.

2011/2012 Ghana Premier League Most Valuable Player Daniel Nii Adjei has earned his first senior national team call-up.

The TP Mazembe-bound midfielder helped Premier League champions Kotoko to defeat FA Cup holders New Edubiase to clinch the 2012 Super Cup last Sunday.

As a result Black Stars regulars like Derek Boateng, Samuel Inkoom and Daniel Opare have been dropped for their recent club inactivity.

Olympique Marseille striker Jordan Ayew, who scored in last Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Valenciennes, has been dropped.

The quartet were members of the squad which beat the Flames 2-0 in Accra last month.

  1. Obiba Eze says:

There is nothing wrong with the players AA has called, infact he is now doin what he said he will do (calling active players)

  2. Dr Who says:

AA should move the call-ups to active & committed players.some of the players play regularly but feel reluctant to apply the same performance & energy they exhibit in their clubs. They only use the national assignment as a care off to visit their families back home.

  3. Paul says:

Jordan ayew is active bt when given black stars opportunity he doesnt value it. It pains me alot. I dont really know why

    • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

ALUGUNTUGUI COACH APPIAH IS CONFUSED AND CANT MAKE UP HIS MIND. PPL LIKE MAX KONADU IS ABLE TO USE A COMPUTER AND ARE THE ONES DOING ALL THE WORK. THEY READ GHWEB, GHSOCCERNET N MAKE REFERENCES TO WHAT WE WRITE/PROPOSE. APPIAH JUST TAKES BRIBES AND IS CONFUSED. CANT MAKE UP HIS OWN MIND…. HOW CAN SUCH A PERSON BE COACH?…

HOW DO U CALL MCCARTHY OVER SAMMY ADJEI? WAT IS APPIAH SMOKING? HOW DO U CALL PAINSTIL OVER OPARE? HOW DO U ALLOW SOLOMON ASANTE TO PLAY 7 OVER ABEYIE? U CALL WARRIS OVER ACCAM AND EVEN BOAKYE YIADOM? U GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

  4. Ohene says:

That is step in right direction. Every player should henceforth know that it is an honor to play for your country but not your right. Appiah should continue to chop until the right quality of players are assembled. Ghana is blessed with over 200 professionals so Appiah should be bold to send his message across.

  5. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

    STRIKERS:
iS acCam the player who plays in egypt and has been scoring in buNCHES IN THE EGYPTIAN PRESEASON LEAGUE? THIS GUY IS A BETTER STRIKER THAN WARRIS.
AA ALUGUNTUGUI SHOULD CALL ACCAM, CLOTTEY, GYAN, B.YIADOM TO PLAY AS STRIKERS. USE DEDE AYEW/KWADWO ASAMOAH AS ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS. WARRIS IS
A NON FA STRIKER. HE PLAYS IN A CHEAP, WEAK SWEDISH LEAGUE.

IF I WERE ALUGUNTUGUI AA, I WOULD MAKE THE FF CHANGES AND THIS IS WHY….

1.SAMMY ADJEI OVER MCCARTHY: SAMMY HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN ANY GH GOALIE RIGHT NOW. IF HE IS FIT, WHY LEAVE HIM? SAMMY IS THE BEST TO TUTOR KWARASAY….

    2. OPARE OVER PAINSTIL: PAINSTIL N DEREK BOATENG ARE THE NEW ERIC ADDO AND MATHEW AMOAH. IT IS TIME THEY RETIRED PERMANENTLY FROM GBSTAR. WE DONT NEED THEM ANYMORE. THESE 2 ARE TOO GREEDY. IF IT WERE UP TO THEM, THEY WILL PLAY FOR GBSTAR UNTIL THEY DIE….AA, GROW UP AND MAKE BROWN MAN SELECTION. CALLING PAINSTIL IS AN EMOTIONAL CALL UP.

    3. YARTEY OVER AGYEMAN BADU: I LIKE RABIU, HOWEVER I THINK AA SHOULD HAVE CALLED YARTEY OVER BADU. BADU WAS INJURED LAST TIME. MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY, HE NEEDS TO BE LEFT ALONE TO CONCENTRATE ON HIS CLUB DUTIES. YARTEY AND RABIU ARE EQUALLY GOOD TO PLAY IN THE MIDFIELD. A HALF FIT BADU IS USELESS TO GBSTAR. LEAVE HIM AND LET HIM FIGURE OUT HIS POSITION WITH UDINESE. AFTERALL, WITHOUT UDINESE, THERE WILL BE NO BADU TO PLAY FOR GBSTAR.

    4. ABEYIE OVER SOLO ASANTE…ANYONE WHO TELLS ME THAT ASANTE IS BETTER THAN ABEYIE IS EITHER ON COKE OR VERY CLOSE TO MENTAL TOURCHING…..LOL

    5. B. YIADOM AND ACCAM OVER WARRIS: WARRIS PLAYS IN A FOOLISH LEAGUE. HE HAS BEEN CALLED TO PLAY FOR GBSTAR OVER 3 TIMES AND STILL HASNT SCORED A GOAL. WHY DOES HE CONTINUE TO GET CALLED? SIKA NTI ANAAA? UNLESS HE GOES TO A BETTER, MORE COMPETITIVE LEAGUE. DONT EVER CALL HIM BACK TO GBSTAR.

SOMETIMES, I DONT UNDERTSAND AA. I QUESTION HIS METALITY SOMETIMES. THIS GUY CALLS PLAYERS LIKE HE PALMWINE. SOMETIMES I WONDER IF HE PUTS ANY THINKING INTO HIS SELECTIONS. WE PLAYED MALAWI N LIBERIA, AND THIS AA GUY CALLED PLAYERS LIKE COFFIE, B CHELSEA GOALIE….I MEAN THE B CHELSEA GOALIE WAS JUST INJURED IN THE GAME AGAINST ZAMALEK, SO WHY DID HE EVEN CALL HIM, U KNOW? THIS SQUAD IS A GOOD SQUAD, I WONT EVEN LIE. HOWEVER, AA MUST STICK WITH THIS SQUAD AND MAKE MINOR CHANGES LIKE I HAVE MENTIONED. THIS SQUAD WILL BRING HIM GLORY. KEEP THIS SQUAD AND ONLY REPLACE THEM IF SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR LOSES FORM…STOP CALLING HALFIT PLAYERS LIKE BADU AND B CHELSEA GOALIE. STOP CALLING USELESS PLAYERS LIKE WARRIS, JORDAN AYEW AND EVEN SOLOMAN ASANTE. CALL ABEYIE, YARTEY, YIADOM, ACCAM, SAMMY ADJEI.

PAINSTIL AND DEREK BOATENG MUST RETIRE FROM GBSTAR. ENOUGH IF ENUFF! THEY SHOULD GO TO SAUDI, CHINA FOR THEIR DAILY BREAD

    • wut says:

Go back to school, earn yourself a coaching licence and try and win the local league, so that if you make comments they would be heard, else keep quiet and let coach Appiah do what he is being paid to do, call whosoever he wishes to play for him.

      • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

WUT, WHY DONT U GO BACK TO UR VILLAGE N LEARN COMMON SENSE FROM UNDER THE PALMWINE SUCKING TREE. BEFORE WE HAD “COACHING LICENSE’ HOW MANY COACHES HAD “COACHING LICENSE”. VERY SOON, THE WHITEMAN WILL SAY…OH, U NEED A CERTIFICATE TO SHOW U CAN PLAY SOCCER…IF AA CALLS COLTS PLAYERS TO GBSTAR, WAT WILL U SAY ABOUT DAT? HW3, EVEN OBAMA GETS CRITICED. IF U ALUGUNTUGUI COACH AA CANT STAND THE HEAT, HE KNOWS WAT TO DO. AS FOR ME, HW3 GFA DONT FEED ME OR PAY MY TUITION SO I WILL COME AND TELL THE WORLD MY UNBIASED OPINION. IF ESSIEN CAN LISTEN TO MY FREE ADVICE AND MOVE TO REAL MADRID FROM CHELSEA, THEN IM SAYING SOMETHING RIGHT…

  6. real sabacious says:

The exclusion of jordan ayew still baffles me!this is a guy who has been playing and scoring for marseille both in the lique 1 and in the europa league.
he has been playing all marseille matches either as a sub or a starter.I dont wonna be harsh on Akwasi Appiah again but i think he has to be consistent in his selection.nii adjei, clottey and afful are not blackstars material.

    • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

REAL, I DISAGREE. JORDAN IS NOT MATURED TO BE WITH GBSTAR. STUDY JORDAN CAREFULLY, AND U WILL REALISE THAT HE SHARES SO MUCH WITH KP BOATENG. THEY BOTH SCORE AGAINST WEAK OPPOSITION. WE WANT IMPACT PLAYERS, ESP OUR STRIKERS. THIS IS WHY STRIKERS LIKE BOAKYE YIADOM, ACCAM OF PETROJET, CLOTTEY AND GYAN NEED TO BE RELIED ON AS OUR MAIN STRIKERS FOR NOW. FORGET ABOUT WARRIS AND JORDAN FOR NOW. INFACT, ABEDI SHOULD TELL MARSEILLE TO SEND JORDAN ON LOAN. HIS HEAD DEY SWEET AM. HE NEEDS TO GROW UP AND WORK FOR PAY. RIGHT NOW, HE IS TOO MUCH IN DEDE’S SHADOW AT MARSEILLE. HE NEEDS TO BE HIS OWN MAN LIKE DEDE. WAT DO U MEAN CLOTTEY AND AFFUL ARE NOT GBSTAR MATERIAL? U THINK JORDAN AYEW CAN SCORE IN BUNCHES LIKE CLOTTEY HAS DONE WITH B CHELSEA? DONT FORGET THAT CLOTTEY DID ALL THIS WITH NO HELP ON HIS TEAM. AFFUL IS NOT ONLY SONSISTENT AS A PLAYER WITH REIGNING AFCON CLUB CHAMOS, BUT HE SCORES SOMETIME FOR CLUB. WAT ELSE DO U WANT. DO THEY HAVE TO PLAY OUTSIDE AFRICA TO BE GBSTAR MATERIAL? NII ADJEI MAY BE THE ODD MAN OUTHERE IF U ASK ME…

      • Desmond says:

WHAT DO U MEAN JORDAN IS NOT MATURED,WHEN WAS ETOO PUT INTO THE NATIONAL TEAM?EVEN WHEN YOU PUT BARCELONA MESSI IN OUR GAME ,HE WILL JUST BE WALKING ON THE FIELD.AFRICAN GAME IS A DIFFERENT ONE ALL TOGETHER…THIS GUY NEED REGULAR CALL UPS TO GET IS HEAD IN THE TEAM.

        • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

listen to this guy. how much time must we give jordan ayew? tell me. jordan WAS GETTING REGULAR CALL UOS BEFORE AFCON 2012. WAT DID HE DO? HE WAS CALLED TO AFCON 2012. WAT DID HE DO? HE ONLY MANAGED TO SCORE AGAINST LOWLY LESOTHO IN KUMASI BECOS OF FAN SUPPORT, DUM SO AND LESOTHO JET LAG. WHEN WE WENT TO ZAMBIA, WAT DID JORDAN DO? AGAINST MALAWI, WAT DID JORDAN DO? HOW MANY CHANCES SHOULD WE GIVE THIS BOY, DESMOND? ARE U BLIND OR STUPID? JORDAN IS GOOD, BUT NOT GBSTAR MATERIAL. HE NEEDS TO BE SENT TO SATTELITES OR METEORS TO MATURE. INFACT, HE SHOULD BE LOANED AWAY FROM MARSEILLE SO HE TOO CAN GROWN AND BE HIS OWN TYPE OF STRIKER. RIGHT NOW,HE IS PLAYING IN DEDE’S SHADOW AND DATS NOT GOOD FOR HIS CONFIDENCE. WE NEED IMPACT STRIKERS, NOT WISHY WASHY STRIKERS. ABEDI, ETO, DROGBA, WEAH WERE PLAYERS WHO SCORED ABROAD AND ALSO ON AFRICAN SOIL. WAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? JORDAN AND KP BOATENG SHARE MANY SIMILARITIES. THEY SCORE AGAINST WEAK TEAMS. U THINK EVERYDAY BE “OUR DAY”?

  7. Akwasi says:

But where is Quincy please give the boy a chance ? En Ghana should call “Memphis Depay” a PSV Eindhoven youngster !!!

  8. Desmond says:

AKWASI APPIAH NOT CALLING JORDAN AYEW MAKES ME KNOW HE IS NOT A SERIOUS COACH…JORDAN HAS BEEN PLAYING MAJOR LIGUES A REGULAR AND SOMETIMES STARTS AS SUB.THE ONLY THINK JORDAN NEEDS IS TO BE ENCOURAGE BY OUR SO CALLED COACH.THIS GUYS IS A GOOD PLAYER,IS JUST THAT HE HAS NOT YET FAMILIARIZE WITH AFRICAN WAY OF FOOTBALL….THOUGH JORDAN IS YOUNG,YOU CANT COMPARE HIS EXPERIENCE WITH LIKES OF SOLOMON ASANTE,CLOTTEY,NII ADJEI…WE NEED TO BREED THIS BOY TO BECOME A TOP CLASS AFRICAN STRIKER LIKE ETOO….. I WANT DEREK BOATENG IN OUR MIDFIELD,GOODNESS THIS GUY HAS SO MUCH EXPERIENCE,SKILL,CLASS WHEN IT COMES TO DISTRIBUTING BALLS TO THE STRIKERS AND WINGERS…LAST AND NOT THE LIST WE NEED A PLAYER TO REPLACE KWADWO ASAMOAH AND ASAMOAH GYAN WHEN THEY ARE TIRED.

  9. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

AA, TELL US WHY U REFUSE TO CALL ABEYIE. AA MUST HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE BEFORE HE LEAVES GH. WHY DO U CONSISTENTLY OMIT ABEYIE? WAT HAS HE DONE? IF U CALL OPARE, ABEYIE, SAMMY ADJEI, ACCAM, YIADOM, U WILL BE A WINNER. STOP CALLING WARRIS, PAINSTIL, ASANTE. THEY R LOSERS!

  10. coconutman says:

Coach Appiah is doing the right thing. Call up active 90 minute playing Black Stars. Players that under achieve when given call ups should be benched. Jordan Ayew deserved to be benched. He kept falling after every contact in Accra and was always complaining to the referee against Malawi. Waris and Clottey are a better choice.

  11. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

IM SORRY. WARRIS IS NOT GBSTAR MATERIAL. ACCAM OF PETROJET OR BOAKYE YIADOM ARE BETTER STRIKERS THAN WARRIS. PLUS, THESE 2 PLAY IN MORE COMPETITIVE LEAGUES. THE SWEDISH LEAGUE IS WORSE THAN THE SAUDI LEAGUE, TRUST ME…..ALUGUTUGUI LEAGUE

BARCELONA ARE NOTHIG EXTRAORDINARY. ALL THEY DO IS THIS…
EACH PLAYER IS LIMITED TO 2 AT MOST 3 TOUCHES ON THE FIELD. PASS, BREAK AND PASS ETC. THEY DO THIS THROUGHOUT THE GAME. THEY PASS THE BALL TO WHOEVER IS ON THE LEFT, RIGHT OR INFRONT AS THEY ATTEMPT TO SCORE. THE ONLY TIME U SEE ANY BARCA PLAYER HOLDING THE BALL IS WHEN THEY R IN THE 18 YARD BOX. WATCH THEM VERY CAREFULLY. THIS IS HOW THEY BEAT OPPONENTS. THE MINUTE AN OPPOSING PLAYER ATTEMPTS TO HOLD UNTO THE BALL, ITS TAKEN AWAY IMMEDIATELY, AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES ALL OVER. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO HOLD BALL POSSESSION.

STALLION, WAT DO MEAN BY “STYLE OF PLAY” IN AFRICA? SPAIN HAS WON 2 EURO CUPS AND REIGNING WCUP CHAMPS WITH THIS STYLE. WOMP3 WEI NA WOP3 WHAT? IM PROLLY SURE THE SPANIARDS COPIED THIS FROM THE BRASILIANS.

  12. michael dc says:

Boakye yiadom is one of de finesse strikers nd must b called in de team. AA y did u omit boakye yiadom from de squad? We need explanation frm u cuz de chap is on form nd even scored 4 his team last saturday
