Berekum Chelsea's Solomon Asante dropped over nationality status

Berekum Chelsea midfielder Solomon Asante was dropped from Ghana's final 24-man squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers because of doubts over his nationality.

It was widely known that the Ghana-born diminutive featured in just one friendly match for Burkina Faso - where he plied his trade two years ago.

Asante came off the bench to play in Burkina Faso's 3-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa in August 2011 but could have gone ahead to play for Ghana.

As it was only a friendly match he could have played for the Black Stars without any problems because it was not a competitive game.

But is has now emerged that he also played in a tournament for the Burkinabes and the Ghana FA does not want to take chances.

The Ghana Football Association in a statement said that it has written to FIFA to seek clarification over the player's eligibility.

"The GFA wants to seek FIFA's guidance over the matter to ensure that there is no confusion over his eligibility in future," Ghana FA said in a statement.

Asante earned a late call-up into the provisional 30-man squad after Albert Adomah withdrew due to injury but has been very impressive in training.

He was trained at the Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord Academy before moving to Burkinabe side ASFA Yennega.

Ghana wants to avoid the situation where they could be made to forfeit their points for fielding an ineligible player.
