Ethiopia could not ward off Ghana

THE show went on - as it often has in major tournaments - without Bafana Bafana as Ghana progressed to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in South Africa.

The Local Black Stars beat Ethiopia 1-0 in a terse affair at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday night to seal their place at the top of the group.

With their team eliminated from the tournament, South Africans turned up in their huge number to support the Black Stars.

Ghana has been the team of South Africans in major tournaments if their is not participating and the Black Stars are their second team when the Bafana Bafana are also in the competition.

With the home team failing to advance to the knock-out phase, the home fans turned their support to Ghana helping them to defeat the stubborn Ethiopians.

In major competitions like the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, South Africans gave massive support to the Black Stars and it is expected to continue as the Ghanaian progress in the competition.

Libya joined the Black Stars in the knockout stages of the competition following a 2-2 draw against Congo-Brazzaville in Polokwane.

For long periods, it seemed as though the tie between Ghana and Ethiopia would end in a goalless draw.

It took a Kwabena Adusei penalty, less than 15 minutes from time, for Ghana to take the lead.

This was after target man Seidu Bansey was tripped in the box by Salahadin Hussen.
