Awal Mohammed set to gatecrash Ghana's AFCON squad

Published on: 13 December 2012

Maritzburg United defender Awal Mohammed is set to be named in the provisional 25-man squad expected to be announced by Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah in  a matter of hours.

The 24-year-old has earned rave reviews in South Africa after a solid start for United in the Absa Premier League.

The ex-Asante Kotoko strong centre-back is almost set to fight for a place in the team, with just days for the start of the continental showpiece.

The performance of the player has alerted a host of South African powerhouses including Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to scramble for his services.

Mohammed is strong and dominant in the air. He grabs few headlines but goes about his business with the professionalism that some of his teammates lack.

Many Ghanaians local fans have been clamouring for his inclusion in the set-up especially with the likely absence of John Mensah.
