Atsu shouldn't play every Black Stars game - Odartey Lamptey warns

New found Ghana sensation Christian Atsu

By Ameenu Shardow

Ex Ghana star Nii Odartey Lamptey has warned against the persistent use of Christian Atsu in order to avoid pre-mature burn out.

The 20-year-old has emerged the new toast of Ghanaian soccer fans after thrilling them with his skills and trickery in the Black Stars’ 2-0 win over Malawi in the 2013 Nations Cup qualifier.

The FC Porto winger was again in action for Ghana in the friendly defeat to Liberia three days after lasting the full duration in the AFCON qualifier.

And Lamptey who himself burst onto the scene as an exciting prospect but never realised his full potential says Atsu needs to be guided from playing too many games his young body cannot contain.

“The coaches; Akwasi Appiah and Maxwell Konadu have to manage him (Atsu) very well. He should not be made to play all Black Stars matches,” he told Accra-based Radio Gold.

“He is very talented but he needs to be guided and supported. This is Ghana, today they will be hailing you but the same people will be criticizing you if things don’t go well.”

Atsu has since returned to Portugal to resume club duties where he is expected to feature heavily for Porto this term.

Well said big bro,you were very exciting to watch in your hay days.
I cannot forget your aponkye brake skills ever,Atsu should be very careful with his national duties combined with club duties also.

  2. bryte says:

YEAH U RIGHT. HE NEEDS TO BE INTRODUCED GRADUALLY INTO THE GAME. HE IS ALSO SOMETIMES TOO OVER-ELABORATIVE ON THE BALL.

  3. Dr Who says:

I concur with Odartey regarding his management, guidance & support by the technical handlers but he can play all our matches without starting him always. He should be used tactfully!

  4. Qee Dee says:

Am glad ghanaians are seeing the wisdom of Nii Odartey the ‘Lamp’tey (l used to call him that in the early 90s). not long ago when he talked about an over hyped local player people thought he didn’t know what he was talking about, forgetting that he himself at one time (1991-93) was touted to the next Pele in world soccer. when he was unable to keep with the hype, he fizzled out. and to who’s loss? GHANA!!
Let’s all help maintain the Ayews, Atsus, Boyes, Jonathan Mensahs, Boakye-Yiadoms, Accams, Warrises and others coming up as world class youngsters so as to get them around for long.
    God bless our motherland GHANA!

Well said all but we should also make sure the Kingston brother retire cos they are all over the news new adays. I am also praying their agents find them a team in europe to go there for their bla bla.

All the eleven players that the Coach picks must play every Black Stars’ game in order for us to have a team. The players must learn to play together so they can move as a team off and on the ball. They have to be able to anticipate each other’s moves and be of one Mind on the field. Atsu is 20 and a professional soccer player, he has 10 good years of soccer to play so he needs to be out there playing not sitting on the bench.

What Africa needs are good referees that will protect all the up and coming superstars from those unnecessary two-footed, boots high tackles with the intent to hurt a player. If the game is in the bag then I will agree that Ghana has enough talent to bring on an early sub to rest a player such as Atsu.

Adam, Afful, Boye, Vorsah, Opare, Annan, D Boateng, K. Asamoah, Dede, Atsu and Gyan should be starting in every game and playing at least 70 to 80 minutes for Ghana to build a team. There has to be consistency instead of experimenting with new talent every single game, calling up new players with every game is not good for team building. Identify your starting eleven and be consistent about playing them regardless of the opposition so we can develop a well oiled machine. The fans want to see a lot of one-two touch beautiful soccer such as Ghana and Brazil are known for and you cannot do that if you do not play consistently together as a unit.

All the African countries are developing talented players and this consistency will give Ghana the edge. If we rely only on quality and talent then we will lose to the likes of Zambia, Liberi and Mali. It is time to go into every game with the intent to win it so Ghana soccer will be in a class by itself. There is too much parity in African soccer these days and that is only good for the book makers and the mafia. Ghana needs to dominate every opponent that is ranked below it. Playing with a consistent eleven will guarantee success. There has been too much experimenting, it is time to start winning every game and prepare the starting eleven for AFCON 2013 and Brazil 2014.

    • Africanus says:

Thanks BBC, you said it all and I agree with you 100%. Malawi subdued the Black Stars in Accra, not because they are more talented than us, but because they have team cohesion. Something that Ghana lacks, because of the consistent shufling of players. That also explains our failure in the last AFCON. If Appiah wants to build a new Black Stars around the young players like Ayew, Boye, Atsu etc, he should do so, but keep the first eleven together in all matches as you rightly said. That is the only way the team can gel and become of dominant force in African football.

  7. coconutman says:

    correction: Liberia.

  8. Ohene says:

Very useful advice. Our friendly matches are opportunities to assess other players, that’s what Brazilians do all the time. Call Atsu for only important games, likewise other stars. KPB would love this if implemented.

    • Africanus says:

Ghana is having a hard time beating teams like Zambia and Liberia, plus we were not able to dominate even Malawi because they have been playing together as a unit for a long time. Ghana’s team has become “fr3 fr3 kobo”. Most of the time our players can’t predict the movement of their team mates, which result in so many poor passes. If you are good enough to play in the first eleven, you have no business sitting on the bench whatsoever, whether friendly or competitive.

    • redd says:

      Who the fuck is KPB……

  9. redd says:

Messi keeps playing week in week out for Barca and also all his national team games but his performance is same.If the guy is truly 19 then we need not worry about burn-out.Odartey n co were much older when they came onto the scene thus the quick burn out.

  10. NABY says:

    I couldnt agree with u more @coconutman

  11. Anokwale says:

I can understand the burn out argument but in reality, football careers are short and you have to shine when you can. This is his chance to become a pivotal Black Star so his time is now. He just has to continue to work out like he just started out.

  12. bawah says:

“This is Ghana, today they will be hailing you but the same people will be criticizing you if things don’t go well.” YES YOU ARE RIGHT.YOU HAVE PAID THE PRICE.DONT KEEP QUITE HELP THE YOUTH.IN SENEGAL 92 YOU SUFFERED A LOT AGAINST THE BIG ELEPHANTS;THOUGH YOU PLAYED VERY WELL.

  13. Nana.abg says:

Dis is a useless comment by Odartey. How many thmes does the black stars plays in a year dat his participation is going to burn him n what is wrong in objectively criticising our players to make them grounded n focus? FC Porto will be in a better receipient to dis comment nd nt the black star handlers…go Atsu n jst remain focus nd de sky will only be your starting place.
