Christian Atsu is in danger of missing out on Ghana’s squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with news he is now expected to be out until January 10, THREE days after the deadline for squad submission for next year’s tournament.

The 22-year-old was initially diagnosed to be out for just 10 days but it appears his injury situation has aggravated.

The former FC Porto man is now expected back by January 10, three clear days after the deadline for submission of squads by the 16 qualified teams for the 2015 AFCON to be staged in Equatorial Guinea.

This means Ghana coach Avram Grant will have to decide whether to take a big gamble by naming Atsu in his squad with his uncertain injury situation when CAF comes calling on January 7.

Ghana has the opportunity to replace the winger if he fails to prove his fitness before the start of the competition even after lodging his name to CAF by the January 7 deadline.

This change can however only be made if the Ghana FA is able to prove that a player is medically unfit to feature in the competition 24 hours to its opening game – meaning Ghana has an opportunity until January 18 to take a final decision on Atsu before its opening game against Senegal.

Ghana who are already missing the influential Kwadwo Asamoah will suffer a massive blow if Atsu is unable to make the squad due to injury.

The 22-year-old’s form is expected to improve in Equatorial Guinea having had a taste of the AFCON in his maiden appearance in 2013.

He has also gained additional experience after playing for the Black Stars at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
