AshGold coach Acheampong throws in towel in title race

AshantiGold coach Yaw Acheampong has congratulated Asante Kotoko despite his team’s mathematical chance of winning the league title.

The Obuas-based club’s inability to win on Sunday against Medeama handed the Porcupine Warrior a staggering 14-point lead at the summit of the Ghanaian top flight with a 2-0 win of their own over Mighty Jets on Saturday.

And though still with a chance of snatching the title from the firm grasp of their local rivals with five matches to go, Acheampong who started out as an assistant coach at Kotoko has shifted his focus on securing second spot – throwing the chance of winning the league out of the window in the process.

"We have to congratulate them [Kotoko] for what they have done this season. I think they have won the title and I don't see how they will lose all their remaining games," Acheampong said.

"We didn't have a good first round but we have turned things around this second round. We are in second and still in the FA Cup. But we have to prepare well for next season and challenge."

AshGold prior to their last three draws had masterminded a seven-game winning streak, after a shambolic first half of the season – culminating in their current second-place in the Glo Premier League just a point ahead of Hearts of Oak.
