AshantiGold aim to revive collapsed academy

The board of AshantiGold Sporting Club has tasked management to help revive its neglected academy after Wednesday's meeting.

The Sam Okyere Soccer Academy, established in 1996, was renowned for identifying and refining talents from across the country.

The AshantiGold Academy helped produced Ghana internationals Jonathan Mensah, Mubarak Wakaso, Daniel Opare and John Mensah.

Others like Lamine Nasir, Shaibu Yakubu, Daniel Asamoah, just to mention a few, progressed to the first team squad and played in the Ghana Premier League.

It competed and won laurels at major international youth tournament including the Citta di Gradisca in 1999.

The project began to suffer after Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam withdrew its sponsorship.
