Asamoah Gyan to captain Ghana against Malawi

Asamoah Gyan will captain the Black Stars against Malawi on Saturday

By Patrick Akoto

Striker Asamoah Gyan will captain the Black Stars for the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi on Saturday.

The mantle falls on the Al Ain attacker following the absence of substantive skipper John Mensah and his deputy Michael Essien.

With John Pantsil and Sulley also absent from the game, the 26-year-old has been tasked with the responsibility of leading the team against The Flames at the Accra Sports stadium.

The move is in line with the FA policy of handing the captaincy to the squad’s most experienced player at any given time as the Black Stars leader.

The former Sunderland goal machine is expected to use his leadership qualities to drive the team to success.

The stand-in-captain will read a FIFA Fair Play message before the start of the match in Accra.

He will continue with his captaincy role during Tuesday’s friendly against Liberia in Monrovia after the Afcon qualifier against The Flames.

  1. bbc says:

Bad choice, Annan should have captained the team asap. How can a player took a break just came back in the team to captain the team while those who where fighting when he was vacating were left out. Hmmmm Africa mentality.

  2. Selfmade says:

@ africanus and bbc…. my question is did the fa erred by given the captainship to asa? If not i don’t understand why u guys are complaining for!!! Ghana has a history with this captaincy issue and i think the rules is very emphatic that if there is a vacuum like what we are witnessing now,the seniormost or the longest serving member takes the mantle and thats exactly what the fa has done here so what’s the qualms here fellas!! I don’t think we could bypass asa and give it to anybody because that ll bring alot of commotion and confusion in camp and we don’t want that doom era( abedi-tony) to visit us again!!! If incase asa doesn’t want it then the next player in line of succession will be considered and should it be anane,we ll all support him to the fullest!! This is time for support and we should all bear in mind that these players are our bros, friends etc!!! Who the cap fits let him wear it!! Viva the revolutioncion!!!!

  3. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

asamoah dosent deserve the band purely bcos he plays in a mediocre league. the saudi league is worse that the mls or even swedish league. ANNAN PLAYS IN SPAIN SO GIVE HIM THE BAND

  4. papa says:

please lets just win and stop this who is the captain nonsense

  5. Vinny says:

@ Selfmade… The Fa erred entrusting the captain to Asamoah Gyan … If you think they made the right choice then you surely do not understand the word discipline. This is the Black Stars ( country collection of football stars) not a club.. You cannot go on your personal break and come back as a boss.. What do we teach the younger footballers ? This is a country and our young players needs to learn from good example… Hence giving the armband to those who respect and appreciate the jersey of we Ghanaians is very very essential…. Well in life the level of knowledge or common sense varies so its understandable when opinion differs… have a good day……

  6. Selfmade says:

@ vinny… Newton third law of motion states that action and reactions are equal and opposite…. listen man did asa just retire from the bs without anything happening? I think u surely knows the answer and needs not to remind u on this!! Come on bro,do u want the dude to play through psychological breakdown?? Have u ever anticipated what would have happened to him if he has still continued to play for the bs when he is not ready psychologically?? We all witnesses to what happened to this dude after the the penalty miss and he confined with his fam, friends and well wishers and they gave him advise to retires for sometimes to cool down the tension and by the way did ghanainans even wanted to see in the bs again at that time? People were ready to even lynced him and his family and for the best thing was to retired for sometime and then come back!!!! Furthemore he formally informed the fa about his decisions so what’s the indisciplined here fella!! Actions are reactions and do he did the unthinkable, he is still a being and has feelings and passions like anybody and therefore decided to call it quit,re-strategise and come back stronger period… now with the armband, how did the fa erred because i made my point clear in my first writeup why they did the right thing by giving asa the captainship but u didn’t give me any reason with regard to the fa erring part!!! According to the fa rules hovering the capatincy, the next experienced or long serving member takes up the mantle when there is a vacuum

  7. Selfmade says:

@ vinny…. sorry the next longest serving member takes up the mantle,so at the moment asa is the longest serving member now( 2003-2012) and therefore deserved to be given the armsband period!!! Do u want the fa to bypass its own made laws and give the armsband to someone else? Have u thought about the implications of such a ridiculous move? As i stated early the fa is being guarded by history and i highly commend them for this sole act!!! They have set a good precedent and i give them five stars for it!!! No matter how bitter u are about asa,he has being consistent for the bs,risen up from heavy backlash from ghanaians during can 2008, he didn’t quit, came back upon all these insult, powered Ghana title finals of the afcon and does it in style at the worldcup too!!! He has pay his dues and one other thing is that he is not noted for indiscipline so what do u mean by indiscipline? He said he wanted o sort himself and then comes back and he has honoured his words so why is the indiscipline from?? Who the cap fits let him wear it and i know be ll wear it good!!! Viva the revolutioncion!!!
