Video: Gyan scores two goals in full Premier League debut

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan scored both goals for Sunderland to beat Stoke 2-0 in his first English Premier League start on Saturday.

The two goals from the Ghanaian superstar restored Sunderland's pride after they were thrashed 5-1 last week by their arch rivals Newcastle.

Gyan was so influential in the game that he was brought down in the box but Steed Malbranque failed to convert in resulting penalty.

Gyan opened the scoring after ten-minutes sweeping the ball home from close-range. Then on the half-hour Steed Malbranque saw his penalty saved by Asmir Begovic.

With 20-minutes left Stoke thought they had levelled when Jones met Matthew Etherington's corner, but Lee Cattermole blocked on the line.

The game was put to bed with minutes to go when Gyan finished off a classic counter attack.

Gyan's scoring feat has proved coach Steve Bruce wrong for keeping the record signing on the bench since arriving from Rennes in August.

His heroics came on his first Premier League start as he has mainly been used as a substitute since moving from the French top flight.

Gyan made sure Sunderland bounced back to form following their mauling at the hands of local rivals Newcastle last week.
