Sunderland and Ghana star Asamoah Gyan has praised the Black Cats' new kit after trying it out for the first time ahead of its release in club stores on Thursday 12 May.

The 25 year-old striker, who captured the attention of the global TV audiences on Tuesday with a stunning last minute goal to earn Ghana a draw against England in the countries' first ever fixture, pulled on the strip at an exclusive photo shoot in Sunderland this month - giving Black Cats fans a first glimpse of the new design for the 2011/12 season.

Supporters will be able to get their hands on the new home strip before the final home Barclays Premier League game of the season - a clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday 14 May - when the team will also wear it for the very first time.

"I really like it," Gyan commented. "It looks fantastic and it felt great to pull the new shirt on for the first time and to see how we'll look when we play next season.

"It means a lot for me to wear the Sunderland shirt and I know the fans think so too so I won't be surprised to see everyone in the street wearing it when they can in the summer."

Direct from the Tailored by Umbro collection, the kit carries the name of the club's main sponsors, tombola.

The strip showcases the club's traditional red and white stripes and black shorts but uses the clean, modern lines synonymous with Umbro's tailored range.

Combining the Black Cats' classic stripes and an eye-catching v-neck edged in black, along with the shirt sleeves capturing the same design element, the shirt also features a striking design of diagonal chevrons across the shoulder area giving it a distinctive and modern look.

The black shorts are trimmed with red and Sunderland's players will once again sport red socks which will feature two white hoops and the classic Umbro diamond logo.
