Asamoah Gyan made trip to Accra to support his boxer clinch WBA Lightweight title in $300,000 fight

Asamoah Gyan flew into Accra from his base in the United Arab Emirates on Friday cheer his boxer Emmanuel Tagoe into clinching the WBA International Lightweight championship with a knockout defeat over Filipino Joebert Delos Reyes.

The Black Stars captain secured permission from his club Al Ain to make the unexpected trip to Ghana for the bout which is staged by his Baby Jet Promotions.

Emmanuel Tagoe beat Joebert Reyes with a fourth round knockout to emerge victor in the night's main event at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night.

The crafty Tagoe, knocked down his opponent three times in the fourth round – leaving referee Stanley Christodolou no choice but to end the fight.

Tagoe's victory means he becomes the new champions for the then vacant WBA Lightweight title.

His win is expected to earn him favourable ratings in the WBA in order to earn him bigger fights in the future.

Asamoah Gyan's Baby Jet Promotions claim they spent in excess of $300,000 to stage the bout in Accra.

“Today I will reveal how much we are spending for this fight. It is over a quarter of a million [dollars]. It is $300, 000,” Baby Jet Promotions Chief Executive Officer Samuel Anim Addo disclosed.

The bout was beamed live by African broadcasting giants, SuperSport.

Asamoah Gyan meanwhile is expected to return to the UAE on Saturday.
