Andre Ayew charges Black Stars to end trophy drought

Ghana winger Andre Ayew feels the Black Stars must cap their impressive performances over the  last decade with trophies. 

The West African giants have reached the knock stages of every major competition since the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany - reaching one African Cup of Nations final (2010 in Angola), finishing third and fourth within the period.

A Luiz Suarez handball denied Ghana an historic place in the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa after Uruguay eliminated the four-time AFCON title winners on shootouts.

Though Ghana have achieved laurels at junior levels - the 2009 U20 success in Egypt in the FIFA World Cup but success at senior level has been devastatingly limited.

The last time Ghana's senior side won a major trophy was in 1982 at the AFCON tournament in Libya and Andre who plies his trade with French side Olympique Marseille feels the West Africans must step up and start winning trophies.

“True, we’re always among the semi-finalists or finalists [in continental competitions]. It’s nice enough, we play well, we go far but, at the end of the day, we don’t win anything. That’s not enough for me,” he said forcefully in an interview with FIFA.com.

“We may be among Africa’s most consistent sides, but if we don’t manage to win titles then something’s not right.

If we can focus a bit more on that issue, we could achieve great things.”

Ayew recently ended his temporarily retirement from international football after meeting with Ghana's President together with his younger brother Jordan Ayew.
