Sulley Muntari has rubbished reports that he is interested in the Black Stars captaincy and reiterated his backing for skipper Asamoah Gyan.

Reports in the local media suggested the AC Milan ace is fighting for the armband on his return to the national team after the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 28-year-old was overlooked for the tournament in South Africa due to the lack of match fitness after returning from a five-month injury lay-off.

In March, he was handed to armband by substantive captain Asamoah Gyan to lead the Black Stars against Sudan in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

There are fears the issue could bring disquiet in camp but Muntari says he is not keen on leading the team.

“It doesn’t really matter to me. The focus is we taking Ghana to the World Cup,” Muntari said.

“After we have done that, probably if we’re going to sit and talk about it, we will. If not, cool we will move on.

“I don’t have any problem. Asa (Asamoah Gyan) is my younger brother. When I went to Liberty, Baffour Gyan took me as his brother so it is like the same thing so I love Asa (Asamoah Gyan) as my brother so there is nothing.”

It will be recalled that  a captaincy row in 1992 led to divisions in the Black Stars camp when Kwesi Appiah was striped off and the armband handed to Abedi Pele.

Do you think it was a mistake for Gyan to offer the captaincy to Muntari on his return as a gesture of respect? What should coach Appiah do about this unnecessary distraction? Who deserves to be a captain of the Black Stars? Make your views known in the box below:

But why do you (GSN) want to set fire to the house in the middle of its construction.
If you don’t start something, there will be nothing.

    Peace…

  2. The captaincy was not supposed to be with Gyan. Suley is senior to Gyan in the team. Pls, the arm band belong to muntari after pensil, so give it to muntari. He has been a committed player.

Because is quite a story if you are as curious as any “smart” football loving Ghanaian and to some extent our new brothers (ZAMBIANS) man will do right..

Let now assumed that around 3000 football fans happens to search news on Mr. Muntari and they are lucky enough to chance on this story they are more likely to click on the link to the actual site carrying the news. Boom that is a 3000 hits right there for GNS!! Sir Advertisers love this. You know what this means?? More money for GNS. Anytime you and l come here to read a story GNS commercial viability increases. l bet you know that right..??

One more thing gentleman, Mr Muntari happens to have around 42,000 followers on twitter alone.Just imagine all these fans chasing his every quotes. Listen to these words of wisdom; A prudent man see trouble/danger and hides away from it but a simple man will run straight into it and suffer!!

Since you are “smart” and l am dumb enough not to make any meaningful contribution to the discourse, please l sincerely would like you Mr. “Smart” to ponder on these two words “DOMINO EFFECT”.Please get back to me if it makes any sense to you with regards to the current issue at hand and l will be quite happy in my ignorant skull..

        Good Day sir.

  6. prof says:

u see the issue here is to qualify for the world cup.
u we begin to generate issues which will not bring cohesiveness in the team calls for division. Then if Essien also come can we say Gyan shld strip off the captainship? Leadership calls for Responsibility? All we need is good team work.Thaks brothers and i know come dee day we will qualify.

    • Kwaku Tee says:

The captain band issue is just a problem being generated by some journalists with their own devilish agenda just to create confusion in the BS camp.Mind you a similar thing happened during the Abedi & Yeboah era, unfortunately they did not see the danger in this and allowed the press to have their way which affected the team.I am so glad that the current generation have seen the danger,I don’t think they think so much about this.Their focus is how to make money and fame.

  7. GH Panther says:

Honestly, this black stars team is the most shaky or volatile one i’ve seen in a while. so many weak points for division frm e inclusion of supposed unpatriotic returnees, coach-player relationship to e issue of captainship. September is farther than we think. Anything could happen within this time. Unity is vital if we are to see Ghana in Brazil 2014.

  8. barongh says:

it is bullshit….Muntari has been giving to much room to talk.AA is the coach ,he chooses whom he want to work with as the captain so there is no sitting down and talking about it period.
Muntari you are near to your retirement and need not to worry about such issues, concentrate on your football talent and retire peacefully.I LOVE YOU but you trying to cross boundaries and ghanaians will not entertain such things(questioning AA tactical substitution decision and now want to sit and talk abt captain) NO WAY

  9. Papa Nkrumah says:

Sulley, There is no need to sit and talk about anything. For now Gyan is the the captain appointed by the coach. All we need is a succession plan in place. Muntari is vice. Dede and Kwadwo Asamoah can follow in that order. The only problem is that the whole arrangement will cave in when Essien and John Mensah eventually return to the Black Stars

  10. Issah says:

Ghanasoccernet, Please!,PLease,Please, you have to stop publishing such sensitive issues if you want us to go to Brazil2014 because this is a recipy for desaster. Have you forgotten so soon how the issue of captaincy between Abedi/Appiah/Yeboah divided the BS? We still have adifficult task ahead of us and we should not abuse it. Listen to the damage control and PR talks Sulley is engaged in and also read the disruptive comments from fans. These comments are distasteful and could derail our plans. Go to the Zambian sites they are very exited an already laughing and praying for more trouble in the BS so that they can capitalise on that. I can assure you that if we continue to publish these stories we will pay for it. Remember Kelvin , Essien, and the Ayews are coming. Let us focus on positives and dontlet us loose this good chance! I must cheer the BS in Brazil. Cheers!
