2014 World Cup: Switzerland coach Hitzfeld tips Ghana for title if early excitement is curtailed

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says Ghana can win the 2014 World Cup if they are consistent with their performances by putting aside the euphoria of progressing beyond the group phase. The legendary German trainer, who was speaking at the launch for the AllSports website, noted that the ecstasy of Ghanaians when the team reaches the knock-out phase often derails the focus of winning the title.

The Black Stars reached the knock-out phase of their previous two appearances at the World Cup but the feeling that 'the players have done well' prevents the team aspiring to win the title.

Hitzfeld says the euphoria surrounding the progress beyond the group phase often derails the focus of the team and that the necessary measures must be put in place to kill the early excitement like the top footballing countries.

"I think Ghana can become world champions," Hitzfeld said at the conference moderated by Tony Baffoe.

"What's important is that the performance has to be consistent throughout."

"When you surprise or pull an upset, the emotions are very high because you feel you have done something special, and that can derail your focus. But such achievements are only the beginning," he explained.

"To teams or countries that want to become world champions, such achievements are seen as normal because they have their eyes on the ultimate."

Ghana will play at the World Cup in June and have been placed in a tough group to play Germany, Portugal and the United States.
