2014 World Cup: Ghana winger Albert Adomah used as right-back for injury-ravaged Middlesbrough

Ghana winger Albert Adomah has shown another quality by playing as effectively as right-back for English side Middlesbrough on Saturday a move that would count to his advantage with the provisional World Cup squad set to be named next month.

Adomah, who has been in blistering form for the English second tier this season as a winger, was drafted to play as a right-back after injury ravaged his club ahead of the match against promotion chasing Burnley side on Saturday.

The Ghana international excelled in the new position showing that he will be useful in many areas for coach Kwesi Apiah who is preparing to name his squad for the tournament in Brazil in June.

The pacy winger has shown another quality this season by being the higest scorer for Middlesbrough so far this season which shows that he can step in for Asamoah Gyan or Abdul Majeed Waris if the Black Stars need a prolific scorer in the absence of the key strikers for Ghana.

Now he has shown that after from his pace and scoring abilities, he can now defend properly giving a new dimension to the advantages Ghana would gain if he is named in the team.

Adomah was part of the reshuffled Boro side that grafted bravely to secure the important away victory.

Boro's defensive crisis forced a radical tactical switch. With Kenneth Omeruo and Ben Gibson banned and no obvious replacement for injured left-back George Friend, coach Aitor Karanka changed from his familiar 4-2-3-1 system for the first time to play 3-5-2.

Daniel Ayala returned from a two month injury lay-off to play at the back alongside Jonathan Woodgate and midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah with Albert Adomah and Emmanuel Ledesma drafted in as unlikely wing-backs.

But Boro soaked up the pressure and broke out early in the second half to snatch a 1-0 victory as Jacob Butterfield scored the winner for the second game in a row and a fourth win for Boro on the bounce.

Adomah despite being the right-back also ventured into attack on a few occasions which proved dangerous for Burnley.

Boro almost grabbed the opener against the run of play on 31 minutes as Adomah wriggled down the right onto a touch from Butterfield then crossed into the box for Graham to stretch and just scoop an overhead volley over the bar.

Adomah then showed his worth at the other end, somehow blocking Ings's effort after Kightly had weaved into the area.

Boro broke out on 76 minutes as Adomah ambled down the right and beat his man then skidded a cross towards Graham's run to the far post but Shackell snaked out a foot to cut it out.

Adomah's performance at the right-back for Middlesbrough could be the new competition Samuel Inkoom, Daniel Opare and Harrison Afful with height, pace, crossing ability and attacking option counting the the advantage of the England-based winger.

Dr. Kwesi Appiah should be looking for the tapes of the match to see if Adomah could be the person to solve Ghana's wing-back problems as there have been complaints over the height of the Black Stars players in that position.
