2014 World Cup: Ghana go in search of African football's biggest challenge
Black Stars are seeking to become Africa's first side to reach the World Cup semis

The 'Black Stars', as the Ghanaian national team is commonly known, are faced with the biggest challenge in African football with the World Cup looming.

The West Africans are seeking to become the first team from that continent to play in a World Cup semi-final, something they fell just short of four years ago in South Africa.

On that historic day in 2010, The Black Stars were beaten by Uruguay on penalties.

Luis Suárez's hand stopped the ball from crossing the line in the last minute of extra time, and Ghana's Asamoah Gyan missed from the penalty spot.

That painful elimination weighs heavily on the 'Black Stars', who promised to come back strong and achieve their ambitious goal of being one of the four best footballing nations on the planet.

Cameroon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Algeria are all at the World Cup but lots of Africans are backing the Black Stars to go farthest in the tournament because of their track record in the previous tournaments.

Now they will have the chance to recreate that and better their chances even though they have been placed in the most difficult group of the World Cup.
