2014 World Cup: Ghana defender Boye hails Asamoah Gyan leadership qualities
Ghana defender John Boye talks about Asamoah Gyan's influence at Rennes

Ahead of Ghana's opening game at the 2014 World Cup on Monday, defender John Boye has lauded the leadership qualities of Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, revealing how the striker helped him during his early days at Stade Rennes.

The center-back has been discussing parts of his early career at Stade Rennes and has revealed how influential Gyan was at his survival at the French club but admits he was hurt when he was informed of Gyan's department in 2010.

Gyan left Rennes for English side Sunderland after the 2010 World Cup.

"When I started here, it was difficult to speak French and Italian which Gyan spoke with the coach and players. He took me under his wings as his younger brother, we spent our time together, I slept with him in the same room.

He encouraged me, corrected, told me to keep working and when I got the opportunity to play I made the most out of it," he said in a long running interview.

Boye joined Rennes in 2008 from Ghanaian Premier League side Heart of Lions and he reveals how former Ghana captain John Mensah recommended him to Rennes.

"As at the time John Mensah was still playing at Rennes and he was leaving so the club asked him and he recommended me to them since I was playing in the same national team with him."
