2014 World Cup: Ghana coach Appiah will invite defender John Mensah if he proves fitness

John Mensah wants to play at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in June.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says he will invite John Mensah to the Black Stars squad for June’s World Cup if the defender proves his match fitness.

According to a report in the newspaper, the Daily Guide, Appiah said his doors are open to former national team captain Mensah who is seeking to revive his career.

Mensah recently signed for Slovakian club Nitra in a bid to get some game time before the World Cup squad is name for the tournament to be held in Brazil in June.

“John Mensah will be invited to the Black Stars if he plays actively for his club and he proves to be in top form,” the manager of the national team was quoted to have said in the Daily Guide.

“If he shows his old form then, there is no way that I won’t invite John to be part of the Black Stars,” he stressed.

Mensah is regarded as one of Ghana’s finest defenders but a combination of injuries and back problems have conspired to rob him of playing time.

His move to Nitra has helped him to start playing competitively but recently he was substituted after just 11 minutes of action which sparked new concerns over his fitness.

If he is fit he will be relied upon to give the Black Stars the needed stability at the heart of the defence.

Infact, we really need John to help us in our defence.

Guys, its really nice to see people come up with first eleven players for the national team.Rlly wana add ma views to the ongoing fans view of our first eleven.
    1.Kwarasey
    2.Opare/Inkoom
    3.Schlup/Afful
    4.John Boye
    5.Joathan Mensah
    6.Agyemang Badu/Afriyie Acquah/Muntari
    7.Dede Ayew
    8.Kwadwo Asamoah
    9.Asamoah Gyan
    10.K.P Boateng
    11.Warris
Essien would not be my bet for the defensive midfield role cuz he is too slow now.I brought in Schlup at the left back role because he has been one of the onsong players that propelled Liecester city to the premiership.Afful is a bit fragile.
    Afriyie Acquah to me should be our DM for the tournament.Ghana will form a two man attack with Warris and Gyan.with Ayew muntari,KP and Asamoah complementing with creating chances.The subs will comprise of a strong team of;

    Fatau
    Either opare or inkoom
    Akaminko
    Amartey
    Atsu
    Wakasso
    Rabiu
    Essien
Badu or Afriyie Acquah or muntari
I BELIEVE this line up is mouth watering for any GH fan and is what is taking us to the semi final.

    • Redd says:

You are spot on with your first 11.I agree Esien is too slow and keeps the ball too much. How I wish Rabiu will be fit.Secondly I don’t think we need to play two strikers from the beginning. We need to start cautiously by packing the mid-field and allowing Gyan to be on top.Dont forget the likes of KPB and Ayew can support him. Then in the second-half with 20 mins to go we can go for broke by takin out one defensive midfielder and introducing the wonder kid warris.Thats my take.

      • popo says:

That could also be another option…but u know Ghana and our traditional 4-4-2.I supported ur opinion initially but Kwesi Appiah would want to explore the explosiveness of Warris to good effect

        • Edem says:

I don’t know Amartey so i think i would switch him for Albert Adomah, unless he plays in the back 4. I think you may have listed too many DM and holding type players. We only have Atsu/Muntari (if he subs) as an attacker off the bench. We may need more attackers in case of injuries, cards, or if we get behind and need quick goals and chances. Although i prefer other formations to our 4-4-2, we know AA must come to tournament with at least 3 or 4 different formations.

Even at four years younger he could not play all the games without injuries. Can we guarantee injury free fast forward four years?
Everything has an end . Akaminko, plays regularly for his team with the right motivation and tactical coaching , l don’t see why he cannot compliment John Boye to form a centre.
All of a sudden John Mensah has find a club after a long inactivity . John was a decent player but now he’s passed it. I don’t think he can compete in the world cup.

    • Redd says:

Akaminko is a decent defender but I have a feeling he will cost us dearly. His temperament is suspect and at the world cup smart teams like the US and Portugal will exploit it to have him sent off.He is a good player though.

      • popo says:

Redd once again I agree with u.Akaminko has being on form this season but he is too rigid and flat footed he is a victim of late tackles too.He will serve as a sub.But his willingness too be I the starting 11 will manifest in the training camp.

  5. Dr Who says:

We all have our other sides.lets not draw conclusion on Akaminko by that one time exhibition in the Montenegro match…I would have love to see John Mensah in Brazil but the reality is that injuries and fitness may cost him the opportunity.Lets rely on Boye,Jonathan,Akaminko and Vorsah(if fit). They can do the job.

  6. readi 2 dye says:

Am sorry afful n opare don’t belong to this team. these two combine will Fuck up a man wet dream. Watched them closely they always almost give up a goal…mark my words, either of them will give up a goal if they play in this cup….what is vorsah not fit to play… baba Ramah from u20 team is better than these two bozos.

  7. nas says:

@readi to dye I second your point on baba Rahman I think he should be given the chance to justify his inclusion in the upcoming friendly marches

We need to play three midfielders acquah ,muntari, prince boateng and three attackers gyan, warris, dede ayew with the lateral defenders (essien, kwadjo Asamoah) doing some over-lapping I don’t think even world eleven can score us. John Mensah should be playing the oldies football league in accra not in black stars
