2014 World Cup Friendly: South Korea to field strong XI against Ghana

South Korea will field a strong squad against Ghana on Monday in their final tune up match ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo won’t depart too much from his starting lineup deployed against Tunisia in the 1-0 defeat at home last month.

But center-back Hong Jeong-ho, who bruised his foot in the second half of that match is a serious doubt.

He has since recovered and has taken part in full drills since Thursday, but the coach could keep the defender on the bench as a precaution.

Kwak Tae-hwi, the elder statesman of the squad at age 32, will likely take Hong Jeong-ho’s spot in the starting XI, joined by Yun Suk-young, Kim Young-gwon and Lee Yong on the back line.

Jung Sung-ryong, who stopped a penalty against Ghana in a friendly three years ago, is expected to be back in net.

On offense, Park Chu-young should get another nod as the featured striker, with captain Koo Ja-cheol backing him up on the secondary line of attack.

Son Heung-min and Lee Chung-yong are expected to be back on the flanks. Ki Sung-yueng and Han Kook-young should be in to take care of midfield once again.

As he did against Tunisia, coach Hong will likely make the maximum six substitutions in the match.

Hong said he hasn’t completely decided on his starting lineup.

“I will have to take into consideration players’ chemistry and form,” he said. “If we can beat Ghana, our players will receive a huge confidence boost going into Brazil.”

South Korea and Ghana also faced each other in their final tune-ups before the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The Black Stars recorded a 3-1 win with goals from Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien.

What I am looking for is an improved performance, creating chances and even taking some as well as good ball retention.USA is more or less the same level as South Korea, can we control the midfield, the pace and tempo of the game? How will our defence fare likewise the goalkeeper in the game? Can we keep a clean sheet against opposition this good? How many chances can we create?

I wouldn’t risk Asamoah Gyan, will prefer Waris and Jordan spearheading the attack.

    • Redd says:

Are you really serious about not risking Gyan? That means as far as you are concerned Gyan should not play in any of our warm up games but when the real deal comes he should be trusted to play and bang in the goals?Even players like Naymar, balotelli, messi, hazard, xavi who play in elite leagues are playing in their warm up matches.Gyan plays in UAE and if anything he should get more games than anyone in the squad if he is the to be at any level compared to the rest of the team.

Hmmmm! Ghanaians and our hypocrisy? Unless you have never played a colts team or you only watch futbol on TV screens, will always deny the spiritual side of the game. Most of players indulge in these stuffs themselves and run to these traditionalist. Yes am a Christian but the truth must be told ; there’s spiritualism in futbol with which some of our players do indulge in before any major tournaments like the World Cup and African Cup.So let us stop casting insinuations at these traditionalist and pray for our players to rather desist from consulting them. I over the years witnessed alot of scary stuffs on the futbol pitch and in the evening anytime Young Hearts(Auroras) plays Young Kotoko in the Tema colts league before the kick off ! This is even at the Colts level so how much more the 2nd,1st,Premier and Black Stars itself??
